View Full Version : Dual to single monitors

I've got dual monitors, with the Nvidia Quadro 500. I've got profiles set up to switch easily between using dual and single monitor modes. When in dual monitor mode, the desktop is manged through the video card, so windows thinks that the desktop size is 2048X768.

The problem comes when I have a window open on the second monitor, such as the video window in After Effects. If the file is savd, then the window positions are saved. If I then go to single monitor mode, and open up the file, I can never find the video window, because, I think, windows has it positioned over where a second monitor would be, so it never gets displayed on the single monitor and there is no way to move it back over to the first.

This also happens it Maya, if the render window is open on the other monitor, so it seems like more of a windows or video card issue then the specific program.

Does anyone know if there's a way to fix it?

Thanks in advance

For Maya, you can go into your 'My Documents/Maya/6.0/prefs' folder and edit the windowPrefs.mel file with Word pad. The first pair of numbers per line is where the top left corner of the window will open, and the second set will be the lower right corner.

As for After Effects, you're kind of stuck having to hook up the second monitor and then moving over all the windows by hand. It's a pain I know (had the same problem after loosing a monitor to a tragic boating accident), but I've yet to find a better solution.

I don't know about nVidia, so sorry I can't be that specific, but with ATi's HyraVision thinger, under the HotKeys menu you can set a hotkey to "Gather all windows to monitor X."

If nothing else, then you could use something like this if nVidia has an equivalent.

One method I've used in other programs is to highlight the window through one of the menus, pressing alt+space, selecting move, then using the arrow keys. Ususally just tapping one of the arrows pops the window into view.

I thought After Effects and other Adobe apps had an option to reoganize everything on the screen?

Thanks for all the ideas. I'll see what I can do.

Try switching Nview on and accessing the nview desktop manager (control panel). In there is an option, under the windows tab, to 'prevent windows from opening off screen'. I don't know if it'll work but it could be worth a visit?
