CGTalk - geometry from alpha channel

Does anyone know if any of the 3d applications can create geometry from an alpha channel? I can export illustrator paths from an image and use that to generate geometry but I'm hoping there is a program that skips that process. Especially since this needs to be done with a lot of images.
