View Full Version : a Mel project for you??
Nicool 09-01-2002, 11:04 PM Hello,
Want someone working with me on a little melscript project : create the polyUnsmooth function. In order to cancel smooth!
It can be used after a mistake or more especialy when someone would take the base mesh of and high-res model.
What do you think about it?? The opinion from novice to expert.
Regards.

The undo and incremental save systems are a heck of a lot cheaper and already written.

You won't be able to unsmooth after you delete the history. Do what everyone else does and duplicate your geometry before smoothing it. I dont even think Mel could do what you want it to do for that reason alone. Mel is the basic language of Maya, but to the best of my knowledge, there's no way around it.
Didn't you ask this question in a previous thread?

Hello,
bigfatMELon you haven't uderstood what I want to do.
Thanks dmcgrath, that my challenge : I'm sure it's possible to create an algoithm to what I want. The main interest is to take the base mesh of an high-res model. Just for fun!

You can't just magicaly 'grab' the base mesh of a smooth, hi-res model as it's a many-to-one mapping function.
The best you can do is to implement a poly optimisation algorithm based on surface curvature, of which there are plenty, but none would probably produce exactly what you want. Moreover doing it in MEL would be a nightmare, not to mention painfully slow.
