View Full Version : Help with facial anatomy...
distortedrealty 09-01-2002, 10:42 PM ok, this is the second head ive drawn in perspective...for most of my life ive drawn either profiles or front views of heads. i ve never studied anatomy but took art lessons for about 4 years. we never talked about anatomy and we never drew perspective pictures. thats what brings me to my image. im not looking for someone to complete this picture, but help with some guides ...like lines and stuff. Anything would help.:)
oh and does anyone know any websites that list life drawing classes or anything of that sort... or know where i can get info on them
thanks in advance:)

it's an exerpt from

This site should be added to your favorites immediately. Great reference material here. Hope this helps some.
Well, every head is different but there are a few guides to follow. You can probably find this info on any anatomy page so I'm not going to go into it much here. Basically, the eyes are set near the middle of the head (top to bottom) and the nose intersects the area between eyes and chin at about the mid point also. From there you can place the mouth roughly middle of the nose and chin. See a pattern?
There are going to variations of course for people who have larger upperlips or longer noses. But you get the general idea. I roughed a basic guide over your image (see below). The only thing that really stands out so far on your image is the size of the neck and not enough definition of the cheekbone. But, you're far from finished with this so plenty of time to correct that stuff.
Let's see it again when you have a little more complete.

Ral1978: thanks, but it really want what i was looking for..:)i wanted guide of some sort.. kinda like what kirt posted, but thanks
mebamonster: thanks for the link.. ive been to fineart.sk hundreds of time, and its a great website... but i think ill try and start reading those pages fom the Loomis book
Kirt: exactly what i wanted. yes i see a pattern and i undertand the variations, but wanted to buld like an ideal face...i wasnt really going for total realism, but something that is close to anatomically correct. Once i get some time im going to finish up the sketch.
thanks a bunch guys:D
