I've been hired to design a logo icon for a company that does "International Textile Contract Engineering." Here is one idea I came up with after many different attempts. Please tell me what you think of the idea, and all constructive criticism is welcome. Thanks.

usually logo's are solid flat colors, none of those fancy transparencies and gradients. play around with vectors in freehand to get some shapes and then you can think about fancyness. hope im not leading you wrong here.

Well it's true that most of logos are made with solide flat colors, but, that don't hurt me so much and for me it's not an obligation.

As far as i see the most inportant thing for a logo its the way you explain it to the client and the meaning behind your logo ... So perhaps you could explain what you had in mind when you done it...
It's will be cool to have the font you have choosen for the name, because i think font is a very important part of your logo.

Well, basically the client gave a few guidelines for the logo:

It needs to look 3D
Must be blue
Must show motion
use a circular theme
Have something to apeal to a worldwide audience
Here is how I would explain this logo. First of all, it is 3D and it is blue. Second, the use of the sphere in the back and the lines comming around from behind follow a circular theme. The lines also show motion. As for the part about a worldwide audience, the sphere can be depicted as a globe, with the lines around it to demonstrate the whole world. I guess this is about what I was thinking when I came up with the idea, but I do have a bit of trouble expressing it in words. I hope this helps you get a better idea of where I am comming from. And, thanks for the comments.

Looking good.

Crit: I think the curves of the 3 ribbon-like things are slightly odd, especially at the apex where they turn to go behind the sphere. The bottom one looks the best but they look more askew as they go up (the middle and top one).

I'm curious... when the client asked for 3D did they want an actual 3D image or are they going to be happy with implied 3D done by other means other than with a 3D application?

JetStrike, I think the logo needs more work.

1) the three stripes look as though they should be coming around the sphere, but they have do not curve - the have an angular break at the left edge.

2) the gradation on the sphere needs work - the gradation does not successfully convey a sperical shape

3) the drop shadows of the three stripes are not convincing

In making the above observations, I have tried to put myself in the clients position.

I do wish you every success in this endevour. Good luck

Some people said it better then I can...but surely needs some more work. The logo has much potential, just need to sort out the techincal issues.

Hi jetstrike!

When I design logos for clients i alwyas try to include an element of what their company does. In this case they are a textiles company so it wouldn't be hard to make the stripes look more like ribbons or fabric. It would help tie in the concept of what they do!

Also if you want the globe in the background try having the highlight off center and smaller. More towards the tope left of the globe. Having the light dead on, makes the ball look flat.

Also avoid having keylines (black lines) around the shape if you are going for a 3D look. Keylines are very much a vector thing.

Also it's very important to include the clients name either in full or abbrieviated (ie CGTalk or CGT). A companies name is how they identify themselves. This logo will be on all their stationary so it's important that clients can tell who they are easily! Very few logos don't have words/letters in them.

A good excercies when designing logos and something I ALWAYS do is to design 7 different kinds of logo. By the time you get to the seventh you'll be warmed up mentally and you'll probably find your best logo somewhere around idea number 5!

Your off to a great start!
good luck..
