Anyone know why an image plane will just be black?

I'm pretty sure this is an RTFM question, but I have: i pulled out the books, looked through the online, and searched for "blank image plane" here to no avail.

I figured it was an issue with the old file, so I started a compltely new file, made a camera, applied an image and it's black. This happens in all the shaded modes. (5, 6, 7)

Color Gain is white
Color offset is black
alpha gain is 1

Image file type is RGB .jpg

Make sure "cameras" is turned on under the "Show" pulldown menu in that viewing window.

no dice.

Show -> all in the camera view with the camera selected. black.

Turns out the issue was that the file was over 500k in size, and therefore didn't play nice. Thanks to Richard for this hint.

sorry to bring up an old thread but I'm having the same issue. I'm trying to use some image planes but the planes are black no matter what. if i render the scene, i can see the image in the plane.

i tried the above suggestions but no dice. I'm using Maya 5 in OS X.

help.
