View Full Version : Translation of Procedural Hair
Groovedog 09-01-2002, 04:35 PM Hello all,
In the past, the Hobbit guy (Dragon) posted a tutorial on how to create procedural hair:

Dragon works in Maya. I'm trying to translate to this to 3dsmax and having some problems. Unless I'm incredibly off, it talks about two opague channels going in the U and V direction. I can't seem to come up with the same result in max. The hair in his goblin image is fantastic!
I spend most of my time in the modelling and I apologize if this is a dumb question.

On another note, when I go to a new material and try to create a gradient ramp in the opacity channel.
Now add some noise to it.
When I change to VW mapping the noise goes away. Bugger :\

I got it to work here by doing this:
create a plane & put a UVW map on it, change setting to 'UVW to XYZ)
create a gradient ramp material, from black to white to black, tiling 15 times. Make the mapping coordinates 'planar from object XYZ'
Assign a material to the object, in the opacity map place a gradient. Again make the mapping co-ords 'planar from object XYZ'. Set the top & bottom colours to black & drag the previously created gradient ramp material onto the middle map button of the gradient map - choose instance.
That should give you a material of hair strands, the amount defined by the tiling of the instanced gradient ramp material, & the opacity top & bottom defined by the gradient material.
I tried this with a gradient ramp nested inside another gradient ramp, but the result seemed intermittantly buggy

You can create the effect using 2 gradient ramps and using a mix material to combine them.

For the hair strands (Map #6) I created a gradient ramp, applied some noise, tiled it, and rotated the map 90 along the W.

For the ends of the hair (map #8) I created another gradient ramp that was placed in the mix channel of the mix map.

Here is the sample scene I created in MAX R4 format. Use it as you like for a training tool, if you make some changes that would be useful to others please post it back to the forum.
