As one of my uni projects myself and a couple of other guys are making a small game, one of the requirements of which is that the end product has to be in 2D. We are allowed to render 3D stuff out and then use it as a 2D art asset.

In terms of the art style for the game, the group quite likes traditional game sprite art or 'pixel art' as some people call it, in particular the kind of characters you might see in the old 2D fighting games, or games like Streets of Rage, or Golden Axe. Since there is a certain skill to this type of art though, and since all the artists in the group consider themselves 3D artists, we're looking to try and get that same kind of 2D style via 3D rendering, so I was wondering if people had any thought about how to go about that. To check out the 'rules' of this kind of style, you might want to check out this site (http://tsugumo.swoo.net/tutorial/), particularly the section on fighting game characters.

So far from looking at the characters i'm kind of thinking that the best way forward would be to go with cell shading, with maybe 2 or 3 steps of shading and then the outlines, then render out with no anti-aliasing at a low resolution, but i'm still not sure that that's the most accurate way to go about things.

So any thoughts? Just to note i'm using using Max and although I prefer rendering out with Brazil, i'm quite happy to use the default Max renderer if it gets the same/better effect.
