I'm working with a team making an Operation Desert Storm mod for HL2 and I'm just modeling vehicles - no texturing or anything. I've still got 2000 or so polys to use up so I'm going to add that grille on the hood, some suspention stuff, and just lots of other random details.

Looks pretty good but remember that the military don't use Hummer's, they use Humvees (HMMVWs). They do look fairly different. Also, do not add random details for the sake of it. I know Steam is amazingly powerful, but part of it's power lies in the fact that, while it can easily compute higher poly models, the reason HL2 works so well on low end machines is because they didn't do that (though they had the benefit of some of the best texture artists in the biz). There's no need to alienate your possible players with video lag.

Hettinger: Whats your target poly count?

Kaltagesta: Yes - I am using Desert Storm photos as reference. I just use Hummer as a generic term. Also, I believe you mean Source (the game engine) - not Steam (the download service).

YNH: My target poly count is under 5000. I'm only up to 2500 now which is pretty good considering I went so high-poly on the wheels. We think Valve used a target of 6000 on their vehics.

Thanks for the feedback!

Keep in mind Valve only had 1 of their vehicles on the screen at once when figuring your polycounts, btw.

Looks good.

Looks good. Thanks - good point. I'll bring that up with the Desert Storm team - they may not have considered that when they gave me the specs. I can reduce the polys easily by taking it out of the wheels and headlights. (Dang cylinders!) - so it shouldn't be a problem if it comes up. I do think it needs more geometry in the hood, sides, and underneath, but everthing I'm going to add is so boxy that it won't make much of a difference in the poly count while improving the overall look quite a bit.

Doh, i must have had a mind-collapse. Yep, i meant Source, sorry :p I Should know, i'm making a mod on it too! I like your rendering technique a lot, and it's good to hear about the source images!

Thanks - it's my quickie 1-light setup. I put the model inside a white sphere then I slap a single spot light in there with a real wide cone angle. I also used Final Gather.

hey nice model you have there , thou i think that you should apply detail to the body, not the wheels, cause details on the wheels can e textured...no need to model much of it, it would be more advisable to model sand bags, oil barrels, even some ammo boxes spread on the top of the vehicle or summit, than rather waste it on some wheels :P

just my 2 cents anyways ;)
