Hi,

I need to be able to convert my gradient brush variant(mentioned in an earlier thread) to work with various versions of Painter. I don't want it to work solely with Painter 7 and 8. I don't mind adjusting the xml. I just really need to make sure that I'm changing it the right way.

I have been really sick, so I missed my self-imposed deadline. The brushes are just about ready(except for that I really have to change the .jpeg so that it's more representative of the variant's abilities). I can make a few scripts to show it's abilities. I can't decide whether to make them .mov files or .avi files. Which is more compatible with more systems?

Lastly I only have to make an html page with the scripts and links to the brushes, then voila' finished. I will also include instructions so that folks don't get too lost since the brush does behave differently from the others:).

Hi Nolita,

Depending on the custom brush variant and whether it will work the same in Painter IX (with the possibility the newer brush technology could affect the brush variant's performance) as it does in Painter 7 and Painter 8 (assuming it works the same in both of those versions), you should be able to simply place a copy of that brush variant in an appropriate brush category folder in Painter IX.

I would not suggest fiddling with the .XML text at all.

If it's in its own brush category, that brush category folder and the accompanying .JPG brush category icon image file (both with the same names) can be placed in an appropriate Painter IX brush library folder.

If you want to use your custom brush variant in Painter 6 or earlier versions, since they don't use .XML like Painter 7, 8, and IX, the only way to do that is to manually recreate the brush variant in those earlier versions:

Open Painter 7 or Painter 8 (whichever contains that custom brush variant).

Open Painter 6 or whichever earlier version you want to use to recreate your custom brush variant.

One by one, toggle back and forth between the two Painter versions adjusting all of the brush controls in the earlier Painter version to match what you see in the later Painter version for your custom brush variant.

Then create a custom brush category in that earlier Painter version.

Copy your custom brush variant into that brush category.

Last, use the Brush Mover utility to create a new custom brush library in the right panel and drag your custom brush category icon from the left panel into that new custom brush library in the right panel. Since this is done in a Painter 6 or earlier version, this new custom brush library will be a single .BRS file that you can zip, upload to your site, and share with other Painter users.
