it certainly is. Have a look what the nodes :
zblur
iblur
zcompose
idisplace
and many others do !
while you are at it do the blimp composite that is one of tutorials that is in the docs !

you can use a "compress" node driven with a zdepth file.

i agree although I generally note the following occours as you get further from camera :
1) image degrades and is defcoused
2) saturation is reduced
3)contrast is reduced
4) objects fog and take on envrinmental hues
5) for day objects become slightly brighter as aresult of 4 at night darker !
for this reason I would recommend applying a depth treatment using a series of nodes and keymixing the result using you depth matte !
