I’ve wanted to do a Lord of the Rings, meets Samurai, meets Final Fantasy style character for a while now. I have some free time so I said what the hell.

VERY ROUGH work in progress (most of it will change as I go):

http://www.bobotheseal.com/temp/WIP/Senoj_wip01.jpg

I’m doing something new with this one. I've roughed out the body with basic shapes and am now finalizing and detailing (model, UV's and texture) as I work my way down. I’m on the head now. Once it’s done I’ll move to the torso and finalize it, then the arms, etc…

http://www.bobotheseal.com/temp/WIP/Senoj-head_wip01.jpg

just started the skin. I like the face but I'm not sold on the colors of the head gear. Still trying to figure that part out

http://www.bobotheseal.com/temp/WIP/Senoj-head_wip02.jpg

I don't really have a target polycount but it's sitting at 8,000 at the moment with a full body modeled under the clothes. I'll optimize out the unseen body parts as I work down the mesh but I’m not going to sweat the polycount much. I’m just going to have fun with it.

hey bobo glad to see ur workin on this, the model as usual is great :D the textures are comin along very well :) i would go for a redish theme on the armour, and perhaps blueish with some golden simbols in the trousers :D

Ill be following thi shtread very close ;)

Looks awesome - great job with the texturing - face looks high-poly when textured.

looks great, especially in the head! do you happen to have a set color scheme for the rest of the body yet? that might help with the head gear, because i don't think the burnt siena is working out. maybe nice & stark like a black & gold sort of thing? just an idea. keep going, it looks awesome!

very nice clean mesh.

Nice tex, allthough I don´t think the blue eyes really fit into the theme and you are right, the headgear colors arent the best, the white lines really overpower the face, really destracting the focal point. :)

free time ?! shouldnt you be doing some contract work for a certain game ;)

-keep us updated

Nice, Mr. Bobo. Been a big fan of your painting tutorials since I started. Only crit I have would be the shin pads. I feel like they should come up a little higher.

Excellent modeling/texturing.

the face texture and body geometry are beautiful, but the headgear doesn't really fit in with the rest of the design, I don't think.

that is one damn amazing model.

The style is unbelievable! A collaberative effort of cultures - if only we had more pieces like these!

Thanks guys!
I put in a little more time on his head tonight. Should be able to finish his head tomorrow and move on to the torso. I’m thinking about holding off on the hair for a bit as there might be more alpha areas on the body that I will need to allocate to the hair texture map (trying to limit the 32 bit texture map needed for alpha to one 512x512).

Now to answer some questions:

If I’m working fulltime on a character at this spec, I can finish it in about a 5 day work week.

Heh, yes the headgear was based off of sparring headgear. Most of the armor will be leather. I want to keep him pretty light armored and agile.

I currently only have time for this guy but I have all of January off before I start at Iron Lore in February. I plan to do a lot of personal art during that time including some contest. Not sure which ones yet though.

I’m doing this one quite differently than I normally do. I’m designing as I go. I normally like to at least rough out a concept but I just felt like “freeforming” it this time. I’m not sure what the body colors are going to be just yet, but I will probably work off the palette created for the head.

Heh, I’m taking a break from contract work while I prepare for my new job with Iron Lore.

Not completely sure what I’m going to do with the shinpad/knee area. I’ll know more once I get down to that part.

thanks again guys! I’m having a lot of fun with this one.

Amazing!

I really would like to know if you use any reference, or do you use photo elements as base?

mmh...just checked the wip section of your site. Looks like you are good enough to paint them all for yourself. Great models and textures everywhere

this isn't dead just on hold. I've been very busy with relocating to Boston and starting my new job here at Iron Lore Entertainment. We are currently in our E3 milestone which is a pretty big with this being our first game and all. As soon as E3 passes I plan on finishing this guy off.

In the mean time check out my new work area here at the office:

Very nice workspace.
After seeing your first post I wanted to crit on the amount of sides on the weird bumps covering the ears and I was going to suggest a metallic skin for the helmet but with the update you came up with a better solution on both parts. Nice work indeed.
Have you considered adding another weapon like a knife in a sheath on the leg or perhaps in the boot?

Sweet!! Thanx for the update BoBo I am an enormous fan of your work.

Great character! I might be going to E3 this year. I went last year. I'd like to be able to play your game and see what its all about. They made a good choice by picking you up to be on their team. Good luck.
