well what can I say.. almost just as cool as that other one. I really like this feeling of the city operating as a machine.

Absolutely awesome! My only complaint would be that the castle itself doesn't have any 'feet'. But the style easily makes up for that. Bravo! And I'm looking forward to seeing the Studio Ghibili version. It looks equally amazing, only a bit more cartoony, obviously.

Nice! The burst of orange into the sky to the left of the castle really reminds me of a Turner painting.

Feet? What are you talking about? Maybe I just need to know the story. For me, the only redeeming aspect of the idea of a moving castle is that one wonders how it moves and that it must be with some force beyond the banality of "walking."

VERY NICE PIECE. My only crit is that i cant tell if its floating or on solid ground between those hills. There is no shadow either way.

Félicitations !!!

Je viens de voir quelques unes de tes autres oeuvres et puis je me disait que ca serait bien en grand sur le mur d'un édifice du centre-ville.

Sérieusement c'est excellent.

I have a weakness for floating cities...:-)

But I agree it isn't quickly apparent whether the city is resting on the ground or floating above it. It would have a soft shadow around the base if it were on the ground, but the way the bottom of the city follows the valley contours makes it read as though it were sitting in that valley. Still, really nice work.

Bravo. Vraiment une belle illustration, j'ai vu au premier coup d'oeil qu'il volait. Il a vraiment l'air massif et énorme en comparaison avec les petits batiments en bas j'aime ça. En tout cas belle peinture continue.

it's awesome but seems inconsistently scaled.

you have very tiny windows, making it look huge in some places. but overall you have larger windows, doors/awnings that make it look like a super-sized castle that is 1000x bigger than normal.

get what im saying?

About the window comment posted by Isurus. If you read the book, the interior of the entire castle is actually just one small room; the exterior really isn't even connected to what "Howl's Moving Castle" is. So I guess you could have it appear however you want, since really none of the windows even exist on the inside.

Then again, maybe you're right. Still great though.

Great work, my overall impression (because of the little houses on the ground) is that the castle is immense and the perspective of the birds makes them even bigger since some of the birds in the upper part of the image appear to be behind the castle what kind of birds are they?

My main critique is actually in the perspective on the bottom part of the castle, something there doesn't seem quite right. This would've been more effective as a 3d model I think and I'd love to see one done... of course there's the shadow issue too that others pointed out earlier.

Nice, I think it would be even more obious that it is acctualy a hovering or floating castel is you add shadows underneath.

Far be it for me to speak up for Sparth, but I think the castle is closer to us in perspective than the BG, so the shadow would be out of shot. I like the depth in this, with the subdued BG. My only crit, and it's a little one, is the flags are blowing in the wind, but the smoke isn't! Fantastic though!:)

Just the separation of the castle / background that isn't really clear...other choices are just perfect to me. Keep Up !

For me the floating castle it's floating, like Poshspice say the shadow must be off the frame, but there are another ways to separate the planes on a picture, one is the saturation of the colors, the castle have saturated colors and the hills and the small houses have less saturated colors. i like almost all, but the lake and the waterfall, seems to me like melted caramel, particularly on the waterfall where the water has to be more transparent and we must see some rocks or at least shadows of it beneath the water. :argh: Maybe i'm exaggerating in the critic. :p
The piece is unique and beautifull. :)

Has anyone of you ever seen Jacek Yerka's work, especially a painting called "The Cloudbreaker" ?

It has a close resemblence to this work.

You can check it out at

i really like the style, but i think there are some scale issues. the buildings in front of the castle suggest that the birds and stairs on the castle are HUGE.
