View Full Version : John Riggs Videos - Anyone In Touch with the Man?
vislaw 12-12-2004, 10:39 PM Awhile back I saw a thread on here where someone had difficulty getting his videos from John. However, I saw where John responded personally and it appeared to just be a mixup. I went ahead and ordered a set in October and have heard nothing back. I sent e-mails to the address on his site and got this back:
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at opus.securepath.net.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.
<sales@characterFX.com (sales@characterFX.com)>:
Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.1.1)
I hate to post this on a user forum but don't know what else to do. If someone knows John or if he is on line here please get back to me, ok? I've got my PayPal receipt showing funds were delivered in October.
Thanks
Mark Johnson

look up his personal website. www.jriggs.net (http://www.jriggs.net) it'll have his resume and you can get his phone number that way. good luck. another place that you can get messiah training is at www.joecosman.com (http://www.joecosman.com) . i bought his dvd's and they're really helpful.

Mmmmm? I wonder where he is myself. I know he was at Passion Pictures earlier this year - and the last I heard was he was working on some new tutorials (wing rig, cat rig, etc...). John's OpenGL Demo Reel on his personal site really shows off some interesting rigs - like Catwoman from the EA Game, and a cat rig which had a really interesting spine rig. Wish he would get back to us... oh well... :(

I've always thought this company was a bit quirky. I mean, first Ron G. diappears, now Jon Riggs. And I'm having more and more difficultly closing this program myself....

I was beginning to get really concerned because all my e-mails to John came back (including the e-mail on his resume). However, today I was able to reach him by telephone (Thanks for suggesting I call him using the number on his resume) and he apologized and said a bunch of stuff has been going on in his world but that he has a stack of DVDs ready to ship out.
I assume he's sincere and will get around to sending the discs out now that I tracked him down and expressed that there's been some concern about his e-mails not working etc. etc.
When I get the discs I'll post a note here.

Well, although I spoke with John himself on the 13th and he promised to send the videos right out I haven't seen them and never got any confirmation. Last night I called his number and left a message for him and asked him to either e-mail me, call me or send me my money back. Nothing yet. Frankly, I'm not very happy. I paid the guy in October. Last week I ordered a Maya training DVD from Mike Kirylo and he immediatlely confirmed the order and the package showed up yesterday. I wish now that I had taken a hint from the difficulty others expressed regarding John Riggs and I hadn't trusted him. This just isn't any way to do business. Frankly, it reflects poorly on pmG because they promote John's site as a reputable resource. None of the guy's e-mails appear to be working (at least every letter I've sent him have been returned ... again, that's no way to run a railroad). I was hoping I could give the guy an endorsement for taking care of this but it looks like just more of the same.
If any of you guys are in touch with him, please ask him to either get his act together or stop pretending to be running a business selling training videos.

John contacted me today and gave me the tracking number for the DVDs. Apparently he had some delays associated with doing pro-quality printing of discs instead of cheesey hand-printed labels. I appreciate that he came through.
I regret that I got a little perturbed and posted the comments I did. However, I just got burned by a guy selling a plasma monitor and also got burned on e-mbay last week so my faith in humanity was a bit shaken. Anyway, I take back my comments. Messiah users are a small group and need to help each other as much as possible. I do hope John can get his e-mails working and maybe get a system in place to monitor orders and give feedback. However, his willingness to work this out reassures me and I'll buy from him again in the future.

Mark, I am sorry for the delay.. I sent your DVDs overnite today and emailed you the tracking number.
The extra time taken to get your order out was due to the fact that I was getting together the new process for creating them. For those that have orded the training material in the past I am sure they were not super excited to see my plain writting on the DVD. I had problems in the past using labels that unbalance the DVDs and would cause some to not play correctly.
Here are two images taken with my camera phone right before I went to UPS

So that is what took the extra time.
I am still planning on a new set of training materials.. if you are interested I will give you a deal since this took so long.
If you are not I am sorry for the inconvienence and sorry for the delay.

Thanks.. I planned it out a long time ago.. but then I had to move and that set me back.
I have a whole new process ready and tested for the next video which will be delivered in windows media 9 format since I can do a 800x600 video on one CD and it looks great!
Its difficult to find the time now that I am working full time at a big studio, but I will find the time and get it done!

Hey John,
Glad you're gainfully employed. :) But if you could find a spare minute, I'd be first in line for your new tutorial videos - well, maybe, second after Tony.
Please.... purty please. :)

Please.... purty please. :) Well I actually allready setup the video pipeline before I moved.. then I moved and everything got all screwy of coarse..
I did unpack the mic and got the new system up and running solidly. I am going to run some tests to check on the recording speeds and it could be a go soon after that..
hmm.. I do have a day off for christmas :P J/K ;)
I really do want to make some new ones.. I still have a ton to show you guys from my time at Passion Pictures!

maybe having download option would be best way to go for them? Then they do not need to deal with packing and sending dvds.

Altho' John may have hit a bump, I found his service to be top notch in the past, and the quality of content in his videos was excellent. In fact, I've thought about geting the dvd because my tape has developed some problems from wear or just age.
Looking forward to seeing what new materials he comes up with. Glad to hear you're in the big time, John.
Best,
Rick

I'd like to see how you may go about ordering his new DVD's - all his sites are down. Well, unless you know him personally or you remember his email address or his yahoo messenger ID. I chatted with him almost two years ago about new vids - although he expressed some interest, he seemed very preoccupied with Maya at Digital Domain.
I have his DVD's including the one by Ron Griswald and they are still very applicable to messiah today. And I agree they're very inciteful, but I wouldn't hold my breath on any new material .. not any time soon. Although it would be extremely nice.
