View Full Version : Above & Beyond - Vehicle - Wiro
Well, here's my entry. I started it 2 weeks ago because I didn't have the time for it sooner. I haven't had much chance to work on it either so these 2 weeks are compressed to maybe 6 days alltogether. I knew I wouldn't finish in time and was thinking of only posting this in the WIP forum after the challenge but I guess I can do both.
I got a really rough sketch but I gotta reinstall my scanner so I'll add that later.
Anyway, here are some first WIP grabs from last week.
http://www.secondreality.ch/gallery/wip/pics/flyer00.jpg
I drew out splines in the viewport to sketch out where stuff was to go. I created a biped for size reference. The first thing I modeled was the framework. When that was roughed out I modeled the engine.
Some parts of it is based on a V8 mesh I found on 3DCafe which had to be entirely rebuilt because the mesh was a mess. The other parts are based off pictures I found of old radial engines(like WW1).
http://www.secondreality.ch/gallery/wip/pics/flyer01.jpg
Some more sketching in space. I'm still unsure of where to place the engine and propeller. Top or behind?
http://www.secondreality.ch/gallery/wip/pics/flyer02.jpg
And one more of the "cockpit". I wanted lots of gauges and handles. Gonna add more of that later :)

And here some renders in it's current state (as of yesterday night) but without the engine. Still gotta figure out where to place that.

very nice design wiro, i glad to see you entering and hope you finish as well. it would be cool if the engine was right under the seat with the barrel behind it. but im sure you got it figured out, good luck, and keep an eye in that deadline

That's a great design. I really dig your style, Wiro. Just this looks very functional and credible.
engine+ propeller on top is the right to do, I think.
hey man it´s cool!!!!I´m waiting for some updates:scream:
P.S.-I love all your works

Hi Wiro.................First of all I always enjoy your creations and overall style. And now for this creation............So far it looks very promising.
My thoughts on the placement of the engine and propeller are........................I beleieve that it is not a very good idea to place the engine and propeller on top due to two reasons............Reason # 1..............With the engine and propeller above the pilot it's just not safe. Would you like an engine directly above you when flying in the great blue beyond............? And don't forget about the noise, you have room, so put the engine farther back for safety and noise reasons.
The second reason is the engine and propeller if put up on top would get in the way of your planned wings,It would be too convoluted, too cluttered. Spread everything out abit. Engine and propeller in the back, and wings up top.
I love intricate details, and yes guages are sweet. A compass, a klinometer, and barometer add a lot for example. And don't forget about those loose and missing bolts you have talked about.;) :)
Anyways, I am really looking forward to your progress, it I am sure will be something very speacial coming from you. See you after your next up-date. :)
Thanks people
PaulV: I'm not fast at all! I spend alot of time scratching my head asking myself how to make the parts fit. Like right now I'm building the wings but I'm not sure how to attach them to the framework so I've been browsing google for links to small airplane sites :)
rizob: the space beneat the seat was meant for luggage and the engines shaft would need to go directly to the propeller (Which wouldnt have space down there). But I see you're not a fan of having it on top either, hehe.
TES and Otacon: cheers dudes!
Virtuoso: Thanks alot for your opinion. You're so right...I've already started moving the engine to behind the seat. It looked too top-heavy as well with it up there.
I already added several bolts by hand but they're quite small :)
Well, back to work

oh boy, your entering, Awesome!! Nice start here, I love the design of the lower part of the ship, it's very simple yet elegant. However, when I look at your ship, I get the feeling I want to see alot of torn pieces of cloth on it, I guess it's my role playing background showing through:p But since your cockpit resembles bones, torn cloth goes hand in hand with it (bones=undead= torn cloth hehehe). What do you think?
Otherwise, I am looking forward to your next update!!:wavey:

Yes, this sure was one late entrance. Nice start. I really like those meters (?) on their long sticks.
If you still are thinking of your wing placement, then my suggestion would be to go for a hang-glider construction. It has almost the same look as a trike (am not sure if you are using that word over there).
Visualboo: Hahaha, yeah indeed! Ah well, a couple allnighters more... :D
Apt Pupil: I don't know where you see bones there, but I was thinking of adding some rags and stuff too, hehe. But all those personalized items will come at the very last. First I need to get the bloody thing right...
AJ_23: Lol, SPANK ME, OH YESSS!!
Mikael P.: Yep, the wings are on top. In fact a Microlight is something of a hangglider with an engine on which is is my main inspiration. Another design inspiration was the BMW C1 (parts of the frame).
Well, here comes. Render as of yesterday night. The wings are made out of individual plates for that riveted look (I'll work a bit more on that). I also finally placed the engines and also reworked them a bit. Since there are no tailfins I was thinking of making the engine revolvable. Still gotta figure out how to make it look like it could work.
Anyway, enough blah.

Hello wiro! it will be a pleasure to watch this develope in such a short period of time. I'm liking everything but the wings so far. I think the wings would need to have a much bigger span to cary the weight of that motor and a man. thats my only crit at this stage. great stuff.....I'm watching this one closely :).

Coming along greatly, the engine is looking good.Keep it up!
Hehe, thanks Fetus23, I thought exactly the same myself right after I uploaded the pics so I've already enlarged them :P

Now this is amazing!
When I saw this first (on your hp) I wanted to suggest to put the wings farther up and/or back, and also to enlarge them... but as I've seen now you've already done this: wings look great, the rest of your model is excellent, love all that detail, especially the controls look magnificent!
Hurry up, I' ll be damned if you don't finish in time ;)

wow.:scream:
this is a beautiful machine.
yay guys, glad you like it
Next update. Enlarged wings, made propeller, attached engine and fueldrum, modified engine a bit, added undercarriage.
Unfortunately I don't like most of what I did today :annoyed:
The attachement of the wheels looks too flimsy as well as the parts holding the engine and barrel. Looks like they'll snap off any time. Tomorrow is fixing day.
Next on to do list:
-fix wheels
-make engine and barrel bigger
-enlarge propeller...that thing is way too small!
-chunkier parts
Then if I have time:
-add luggage
-some personal gear
-wires and cables
-more levers!

The level of detail is awesome, i really don't think the landing gear go with the feel of the model, also you talked about making it look like it would work and it doesn't with those landing gear, make them shorter, more moving parts, like shock absorbers and such
Virtuoso
09-02-2002, 09:32 AM
It's looking very nice indeed Wiro. I am glad the engines and propeller are now where they belong............. I also like your new ideas you mentioned for improvements. The chunkier, more outrageous a little out of the norm idea might be a good one too...............
Now once all is done it will be time to put the very beautiful "BACKLIT GIRL" of your's in this vessel..............;) :)
http://www.secondreality.ch/gallery/3d/imagepages/phyllcloseup.html
Now this beauty in your vessel will really be sweeeet..........
Don't forget those loose bolts and that occasional missing one as well Wiro.........;)
Keep up the great work.

Looking great there Wiro! I can't believe I missed this thread. Anyway, I only have one little suggestion for you: SEATBELT. I for one wouldn't go up in that thing without a seatbelt strapping me in. :)
Yep aggreed, I'll change the gear tonight!
Virtuoso: funny you mention that, the biped you see on the first page is hers...a small hint to who'll be piloting it ;)
If you look closely you'll see several bolts around. Gotta zoom in really close to see if they are lose though, hehe
Mebamonster: Seatbelts! Good idea, will be added

Hey Wiro,

:buttrock: great model and killer design. superb attention to detail I like the barrel which i assume is for gas at the top. keep up the good work can't wait to see where you go from here.
Nice paintover idea DimitrisLiatsos. I was considering some supporting struts at first too but I think that as long as I keep the thin legs it'll still have that spidery look. I've started remodelling the legs now but as I came home late from work today I've hardly done anything yet...
nucstle , yeah the barrel is for fuel. I put in a hose between it and the engine too :)

gotchya! :) very nice work indeed, i missed it so much.
1. will you put some structure for the wheels/landing gears?
2. what about the tail wings? or it's just a kite/glyder with motor?
3. is a small windshield good? or bad?
4. lights, it need lamps IMO
5. wires & cables from the control handles to the wings?
6. & safty belts?!!!
7. also some place for a parachute! ;) (i don't mean it may fall!)
cheers...
very nice Wiro - i like it - hehehe what a heavy motor for that ultra light flying thing
Sorry for the lame update but I haven't had much chance to model. And now I only have tomorrow (away on Thursday) so I guess I won't finish but ah well...I'll post the further progress in the WIP forum then.
I changed the landing gear, the struts holding the engine and enlarged the propeller.
ila_solomon: I won't be adding tailfins. The engine will be able to rotate a bit to compensate for that. Windshield...maybe, I might just give the pilot goggles :)
Lamps! Good one!
Wires and control cables will be added in the end when the design is set. Safety belts will be added and....hm, parachute? Another good one

That is far from a lame update Wiro............I think it's come along very nicely. Your usual top notch high quality with tons of originality has shined through again. Just get it done and make sure to show off it's beauty in the WIP section when possible, I'll be looking for it.
And yes that engine sure is looking quite the beast for the rather light vessel.............Lot's of speed potential.......Maybe it will even be able to keep up with the Pod racers of phantom menace ;) ..............
I love the goggles idea at any time for that "Mystery character";) you will be creating for this fine vessel. Plus guages, seatbelts, cables, nut's and bolts, hmmmm, sweet vessel already and I think it will just get better with more Sweat and a little blood.............;)
Now rent that thing out to me so I can take a nice cruise over the Swiss alps with it Wiro.................;)

Being an airplane buff the first thing i think when i see it is that it's MAJORLY tail heavy, especially now that you've moved the fuel barrel. I'd personally suggest moving it for 2 reasons.
1) where it's at now it'd explode as heat from the engine rises, and the only place it's gonna go is into your fuel source.
2) Putting it higher as it is only gives an even larger impression of tail heaviness.
My suggestion would be to put it under the pilots seat area there as it would lend a bit of believability to the model. I'd also make the rear wheels probably 2x bigger than they are now.

HY WIRO, IT LOOKS AWESOMELY GOOD
just one little detail, considering the engine position it looks like the plane would flip over due to the engine and gastank weight, dunno, it gives me that impression
virtuoso: haha, yeah I wanted a powerful engine. Ultralights look lighter than this thing so I thought I might as well add some extra oomph :D
There's nothing mysterious about the character though...I still have to finish my girl model, ahem...
swampthing: excellent! Yeah, I felt it being too arse-heavy too but thought I could balance that out with some doodads in front. but you're right, I've moved the fuel now. I wanted to keep the gear small though. Maybe I'll enlarge them if it still doesn't look right.
Lorenzo and rage288: thanks dudes! :D
Well, here's my last update for this challenge. I'm unfortunately not in tomorrow. The other updates will be in a thread in the WIP forum.
I moved the fuel to under the seat, put in some luggage (blanket, sleeping bag, bag of...something, pans, toolbox and fire extinguisher) but haven't attached the luggage with any straps yet, they're just hanging in space.
I think the engine doesn't look attached enough so that'll be in the next update along with the suggested lamps, straps, etc.

Wiro, fantastic work as always. Only thing that I questioned was the lack of a heal support for the feet. Though about myself flying that thing and it looks like your feet would not be supported by a floor of some kind. That and most people pivot their feet on the floorboard, "heal-tow" so to speak. Obviously nothing important, and I'm not sure if it would look right with a small extension to rest your heals on either. Anyway keep up the good work.

really impresive clean and great moddeling.
But I have some crit
I don't know about your landing gear. I've seen some other comments abouth it but I think I will add some and maybe even repeat some.
Your weels are great moddeld and it is nothing about your moddeling skils but they more look like weels which are under one of those babywagons*.
I think They can be wider and fatter. now they don't seem to be build to hold the weigt of the vehicle.
1 I think it is the look of the weels
2 the way you attach them to the metal frame.
Then abouth the metal frame which supports the weels.
I don't know if you did this with the front weel but maybe you could ad a suspention ( are they called that way? ) A think that makes landing less hard. it absorbes the blow when you first hit the ground when you land.
And I think you might connect the 2 back weels, this is just from the constructive point of vieuw. It might give the landign gear a + in strengt and looks
From the point were the already suporting bar meets the main bar of the right/left weel at the back and then from that point to the same point of the other weel.
Well this might be some com for your update in the WIP section of the forum
Further I must say that is is a fabulous peace of 3d moddeling and I think I can learn much from only whatching your art. and then especialy learning to keep the moddeling as simple as posible and as clean as possible.
Then I have a question. the first 3D images were really rough: did you made them cos you wanted to get a I dea how it would look like in 3D or did you made it as a rough start and then detailed it?
and the bolds on the wings is that Bump map or you really made the 3D?
Greets
X. San Giorgi
* you know when you have kids and you go into the city, and you don't want them to run arround then the parents trap them in one of those wagons and they even van put their luggageon the wagon< I actually don't know how they are called in English>
ila_solomon: hehe, like you I hate to texture :)
Well, I'll get down to it when I finish the pilot as well (if I ever get to it...) And don't even get me started about animation! I always say I will animate and never get around to it, lol!
swag: I'll upload some wireframes tomorrow
haggismaximus: good points! I'll have a look at the pedals. I'll definately add the heel supports
Iguiniz.X.: more great suggestions! Yeah, maybe they do indeed look too light. I'll scale 'em up and see what happens. I did model them off real airplane wheels though. By the way I think you mean a baby carriage? I think they look like it because they're not compressed by the weight of the plane, making them look like hard plastic. I was thinking of adding weight when I'm finished modelling everything.
There are suspensions on the landing gear. The square struts are sort of telescopic so they slide in and out of eachother. Not very obvious I know...
Good idea...I think I will indeed connect the back gear.
Glad you think you can learn something off the pics, hehe. It's my first mechanical model in quite a while I've realized and my first ever fully subD mechanical model ever (as opposed to using NURBS) so it's a learning process for me too.
I first sketched out the whole thing with splines (you can see them in the first pic) to get the rough proportions. Then I started blocking out the different big pieces with simple geometry. Then I built ontop of that again, sometimes using the rough objects, other times from scratch. The frame was drawn out in splines and then converted to tubes.
The nuts and bolts are all modelled and placed by hand. Not quite as much a job as it sounds like but then again I don't have as many bolts as Ila_Solomon :D
