depends on the laptop and the ram
get a powerbook with 2Gig ram and let the good times roll
I have Dell Precision M60 with Quadro Go 1000 and Maya (and all other 3D programs) runs like a dream. :)

You might need to get an external mouse that has three buttons or a tablet. I've used Maya on a similar system with a wacom tablet and it works. I don't use the laptop for any rendering because it only has 512MB, but for modeling it works well. You might try downloading the Personal Learning Edition and trying it on the laptop first.
In my opinion you have to ignore that laptor because of video card (onboard solution).
In this way you haven't OpengGL acceleration (no AA), and a low resolution isn't so good too (trust me, 1024x768 for a laptor is very very low resolution).

I dont think it really matters that it's a laptop, its the specs as usual with any comp which will determine if its going to be nice to use. I have to use a laptop since I dont have a desktop anymore but it still runs Maya pretty well. I slapped in some extra ram and have got a decentish radeon graphics card. The only time I think I'm really going to feel the pinch is when it comes to rendering because I was used to rendering on mutiple machines at college. Though in that respect, even if I had a desktop it would still seem as slow. Laptops are fairly pricey so it is a considerable investment. Just make sure you do your research well, perhaps comparing against Maya speclist (I believe there is a list of supported video cards on the alias website)

Like what Dias said stay away from shared graphics!! It prob means that it isnt upgradable or even has an agp slot for a graphics card to go into, I think this will suck for maya go for something with a better graphics card and with similar or better specs than this..

does anyone run maya on a laptop that is not the m60 that they are happy with ie: overlays, scupt tool redraw works etc.?
I am looking for a notebook as well - I would rather not spend the $$$ on the m60 unless I absolutely had too . . .
help . .

I have a Dell Latitude D800 with the Nvidia 5650 go.
The only thing I´ve noticed is sometimes in the render view once the render is finished the rendered image looks like "broken glass" so I have to click the "1:1" button to get the render to show up correct. Other than that I´m very happy with it.
(Btw I´m using the Omega drivers.)
Just a side note about font dpi settings on Dell laptop:

Okay . .. I have been working with Maya for about 4 years now . . .. 3 of those years I have had a laptop - Winbook j4 http://www.winbook.com/ (http://www.winbook.com/) 64 meg video card. Generally, I use it for modeling and render on a different machine. For the most part, I have had no problems. But, you never can tell how well it is going to work . . . I was lucky. I have friends that can’t even get Maya to work at all.
In the next few months, I will be purchasing a new laptop with Maya in mind. I have been looking for the last 6 months and decided to wait until a new Maya approved video card is out, which will be available on many of the present mobile workstations (Apox. $3,000) within the next 2 months.
Ask if you can install Maya first to try it out before you buy one.
