Thanks, here is a wire. As you can see the clip has a very high polycount which isnt necessary so it definitely needs remodelling ;)

Well it's not quite photorealistic to me. . .
I think the main thing is the lighting.
The lighting on the floor looks like it's coming from a winow or some such thing at the back of the room, behind the pen.
But the pen is being lit from above the camera.
Try matching the two better.
The pen overall would be darker, and would have astronger rim light from the window.

It looks ok, but here are some things you can work on.
- Spend more time on the model.
- The texture on the floor also doesn't look to great. The closer the texture is to the camera the more blurry the texture becomes. Not the good type of blurry, but you can see the images imperfections
- Use some DOF (depth of field)
- Check out some GI renderers they really help with rendering photorelistic images.

I dissagree with distortedreality. Don't use GI, just keep working on your lighting. Also, the biggest problem I see with this scene is the unrealisticly sharp edges on everything. Bevel every sharp edge. It will make really good highlights on the surfaces. Keep in mind that no surface in real life, no matter how sharp it looks, is as sharp as a 3D edge.

I agree with french, and would simply add that there needs to be more in this scene.
Right now we have a pen on the floor. . . it would help the whole story of the scene if there were even a desk or chair leg in the shot. . . something to give the whole thing context.
It would be better to build a scene for the whole thing, with pens, and anything else you find on your desk.

I think the shadow the pen is throwing should be darker cause it looks like the pen's floating. How would I do this without changing the position and the multiplier of the light?
Also the DOF effect seems to screw up my AA. Can I do something about that?

I dunno about the DOF thing, but the shadow could be darkened by lowering your fill and/or ambient lights.

the tip (part where colour comes out of the fibrous thing) is wrong
it just dodnt look right compared to the wire, and even without it.

I think that it's just that the whole pen (including chrome tip) should be one smooth taper, and it looksl ike the plastic tapers in, and then the metal goes out and then back in. . .
The first version was much better. You only needed to adjust the lighting on the pen, not the entire table!.
These crits refer to the first version;
the shadow under the pen is too light, see if you can add some lights underneath it with negative multipliers. Or adjust your fills.
The shadow should also be much softer considering the size of the window behind it.
Also with that saturated blue of the pen you should simulate some bouncelight coming off it and coloring the table blue. The brigher a color is the more bounce you expect to see.

Hmmm... I think I also prefer the first render. However, I like the little bevels and tweaks on the second one.
Somewhere inbetween then, eh? The shadows don't look right either, although I don't think GI is needed to get decent lighting and shadows.

Tumerboy: I tried lowering the lights but it only changes the shape of the shadow. The shadows wont get any darker..
say-g: The pen itself is inside the tip u are referring to as it is 'off'. The two blue shaft parts are separated by the metal ring.
Wiro: The only thing I changed in the 2nd render is the lighting, aside from the chamfers at the end of the pen.
wozzyke: Steenbergen is in Holland. But u were close. I'm only 40 minutes from Antwerpen.
I'm still stuck with the shadows not getting any darker. :argh:

I'm confused about how lowering the light didn't darken the shadow. . . I don't know what lights you lowered.
Here's the thing, you should have a key light, that's coming from behind the pen, from the window or whatever looks like it's reflecting in the table.
Then you should probably have several fill/reflected lights around, that would light up the shadows.
What you would do then, is lower the fill light settings, but keep your key/rim light as bright as they ever were. . .
What program was this done in again? I can probably explain better if I knew that.
LOL I just got back from Belgium, Amsterdam and the UK.
We were staying near Ghent, and took day trips to Antwerpen, Brugges, Brussell, and other such places.

Last post, can't seem to just add a darker shadow to the 1st render without the overall lighting to be the same. I guess I just suck at lighting...

If you want darker shadows you can play around with shadow density. It can be found under "Shadow Parameters". By default its set to 1.

well, whatever you did, I like that much better, better dynamic range, and nice colors.
It also looks like more of the light is coming from the window.
Much better. . . now just make a better scene for it :P
