View Full Version : Logo on glass..

Guess this thread got deleted due to the server fail so here it is again..

It may be very easy but to me its rather tricky... putting a logo on a glass. The glass is using a near black diffuse color so I tried creating a big near black bitmap with the logo in the middle and putting this in the diffuse slot. It worked but the logo inherits the reflection and refraction of the glass material. The logo has to be solid.. So ok I tried using a mask. I used a multi/submaterial with one submaterial for the logo and one for the rest of the glass. I selected the part of the glass where i want the logo and applied the logo submaterial:

-logo bitmap
-mask bitmap
-underlying material which has to be glass

However, for the underlying material to be glass I have to use reflection and refraction. But again the logo inherits them.

Is there a way around?! :hmm:

(since my reply to this got lost in the server crash, I'll post it again)

Create a Blend material. You'll see that it has two material slots and one mask slot. Create a B&W Mask of your logo (i.e: black background but with a completely white version of your logo), put this into the mask slot of the material.

Now create a material for your glass (reflection/diffuse...etc) and copy this (drag it into) into one of the two free slots in the Blend material. In the other slot, create a material for the Logo (diffuse...etc).

Now for ease of placement (this is a bit of a fudged workaround of a bug in Max), in the first material slot of the Blend material (either your glass or your logo material) - select a free map slot (specular/bump...etc) and put an instance of the bitmap you have in the mask slot. Check the button "Show Map in Viewport", then turn the map off (uncheck the tick next the the percentage in the material).

When you apply the Blend material to your object, you should be able to see the mask and control it's placement with a UVW modifier. If it renders with the materials the wrong way round (Logo looks like glass) - simply invert the mask you created.

Hope this is helps,

:D
