View Full Version : WIP - Mecha Gorilla
Littleberu 12-11-2004, 12:05 AM Well, this is my second model ever. I still have a lot to learn, and I hope to get some help from here!
Here's the concept for my Mecha Gorilla

I especially want to practice my UV mapping skills and try new textures mapping tricks (like Normal Maps and Alpha Maps) with this model.
I'll post an update later!

Cheers! Here's to "second models". I'm on #2 myself. Good luck to you. A challenging concept. I'll wait till #3 or #4 for a quadraped.

Who is number 1? I am not a number, I'm a free man!

The backside seems a touch far too back, its something which can probably be easily adjusted though so no need to worry. Seems a bit tough for 2nd character model, good luck anyway:)

My first thought is along the lines of 'what exactly is it meant to be?'
Is it meant to be a mech in the shape of a gorilla? or an actual gorilla with cyborg/mechanical limbs/parts?
Either way, i'd say it looks like a gorilla, with fairly random metal plates attached to it. ie.- the mechanical parts don't actually look functional or make 'sense'. I would definately research other mechs, looking at the functionality of the design and structure. Like how the limbs are attached and how they move. And channel that research into a more detailed and considered concept. I think if you start modelling from that concept drawing, especially as it's only your second model, you'll end up with something extremely vague. I'm just thinking that if you're going to be doing normal maps for it aswell, (a lot of work) then you'd be better spending much more time on the initial idea, to make sure all the invested time on building the model is worth it.
Hope this helps.

Well actualy, Mecha Gorilla isn't a very good name to begin with. The gorilla body itself is there, but is only protected with some metal plate, as you said. The concept I had in mind was that in the beginning, it was used as a remote controlled things to combat in arena, but quickly, the gorilla was able to think on its own, and he went mad and all that. But yeah, it isn't really a "mecha gorilla", but the name : "Gorilla with some metal plates randomly placed over its body" didn't fit, you know! :P
Ok, here's the update. I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. I wanted a lot more polys in the head, mainly because I changed my plans (thanks RampanT for the tips). Now, I'll practice my modelling and also my UV skills, and maybe rig this model.

Too much poly, eh?

Ok. Too ambitious. I'm now modeling the body, and I have no ideas how to do this. Maybe I should do some humanoid before anything else. Hehe. I think I'll scrap this project, start another one, and post some WIP when I'll need some help. :\
Anyway!
