View Full Version : Modelling standards & practices
ratbaggy 08-31-2002, 08:48 AM Just wondering what people’s opinions are or what is standard practice.
Which is best to use, single/continuous mesh (with smoothing groups) or multiple 'attached' objects? (in general, for real-time, for broadcast.)
Why and/or when should you use it? (ie: easier for rigging, animation, texturing, etc.)
thanks.

it all depends on the object. for non-organic modeling it would be easier and faster many times to use many independent objects. For organic objects it is ussually best to make fewer objects, but not always necessary. It often depends on the limits of the package. There isn't really a standard much in the CG realm, basically find the weaknesses of your app and avoid them.

it is all depends on what are you building. for a character. i whould build 1 continues character so that i won't get seams and stuff. However, it will get me a hard time when rigging and texturing. So that i think i will chop them into pieces.
if i am building a robot, for many joins, i will model them in pieces. since i only have to "parant" or "constrint" them to the skeleton, not rig. since robots always have solid blocks, which is not able to deform into different shapes.
