View Full Version : Discussion: Who are your heroes?
jeroentje 08-31-2002, 08:17 AM This thread got deleted in the meltdown (http://www.cgtalk.com/announcement.php?s=&forumid=31) last night (night here where I am) so here is a little restauration.
What I was thinking about, is that a lot of you are influenced by artists most of us have never heard of cause they are just localy known heros or whatever. And those people can be amazingly good, as I have seen in one of the links from Pancreas before the server went crazy.
So again I ask you: Who are the artists that make you want to be as good as them? Who are the people that make you walk to the bookstore every day to see if there’s something new of them? Who are the artists that made you want to pick up a pencil and made you start drawing in the first place?
Here is my little shortlist.
Herge (http://www.lambiek.net/herge.htm) Tintin
Henk Kuijpers (www.franka.nl) Franka
Marten Toonder (http://www.lambiek.net/toonder.htm) Tom Poes
Tome&Janry (http://www.lambiek.net/tome.htm) Their 90's version of Spirou
Joost swarte (http://www.lambiek.net/swarte1.htm)
W. Vance - XIII
Don Lawrence (www.donlawrence.nl) Storm
Schuiten & Peeters (www.urbicande.be)
Ben Verkaaik – Dutch ultrarealitic oilpaint illustrator, my hero in my airbrushing days
The old Masters (www.rijksmuseum.nl)
Leonardo DaVinci - The greatest concept artist ever alive

I like quite a lot of contemporary illustration:
Jason Brooks (http://www.jason-brooks.com/)
Kirsten Ulve (http://www.kirstenulve.com/)
Graham Rounthwaite (http://www.off-centre.com/graham.htm)
Rian Hughes (http://www.devicefonts.co.uk/)
and of course Jamie Hewlitt (http://www.gorillaz.com/index_N_mie45.html)
Most of these guys are english, I also like a lot of French BD stuff, particularly Moebius/Giraud, Bilal, Manara (the last two aren't french but you know what I mean), Franquin (especially the "idees noires" books), Bourgeon, Tardi, Hermann (I met him when I was 12 and showed him some truly awful drawings), and too many others for me to remember this early in the morning :)
Nice thread :applause:
