View Full Version : I would like a little help on painting grass.
LadyMedusa 12-10-2004, 12:02 PM I would like a little help, maby some hints or triks, on painting grass in Painter 8.
It seems like most artists try to avoid grass, so I can't really study them either...
Could anyone please help me a little?

Depicting grass can be as simple as patches, or as detailed as single blades of grass. It's up to you how detailed you want to get. I have never noticed that artists tend to avoid grass, and I don't know where you get that from. Artists don't avoid painting anything--they paint what they want/need to in order to get their vision across.
I've painted a lot of grass in the Scythe Wolf piece: http://www.ethereality.info/ethereality_website/paintings_drawings/new/scythe_wolf/scythe_wolf.htm
I don't know if that's what you're after, but it might help a little.
It's basically just using any of the brushes that is set to taper with less pressure, and then quickly stroking in each blade. Darkest values first, then middle value blades in front of those, then the lightest value last. It's a very simplistic approach, and depending on your lighting, it might not work for you.

Could anyone please help me a little?Try the grass nozzle that comes with Painter. It's a lot like those we first created for Fractal Design back in '95, although not nearly as good ;) Point is, grass nozzles offer a fast and effective solution. If you need a painterly look, just use a smear or distort variant (or a cloner) to simplify or alter the detail.
Of course, more complex grasses are harder to do. I've done extensive work with grains & grasses, which are reflected at http://www.gardenhose.com (http://www.gardenhose.com/). Use the grains & grasses link.
