I guess the server wipe my question away. Think I'll start a new thread or it'll get too messy

Flypaper, I didn't get yr answer also so its ok for u to post a reply again?

Dunno if the rest saw it, but i'll post again...

How did they do this model? With splines? If so, how did they apply the material on it?:wavey:

Guess that question didn't work out... Anyway, 1 question:

I've got a material that i made and place it in a diff directory. Where do i put it so that my material editor can find it? Has it got to do with the asset browser?

the house is made out of Polygons, not splines.

Thx for the reply...

Anyway I've got a new question...
is there any way to make a material look old (e.g. metal roof) from the material editor or do i have to do it in photoshop?

Although the exact method and procedure to do this would cover a good 50+ pages, the basics of it is...

Affect the specular and glossiness values (color and spinners) as this can help modify the look. You obviously want something that is a bit dull and doesn't pick up hilites or lighting evenly.

You should add some procedural textures or existing bitmap images into other material channels (diffuse, bump, reflection, ect) and then use the material channel spinners values to tweak the output.

Probably the most important channel that you want to affect is the bump channel because this will help breakup the lighting and make the wooden shingles look worn, cracked, and aged if you do it right. This can be done with a simple procedural texture, such as noise, that is stretched, or you could get a decent result from using the same bitmap that is found in the diffuse channel.

The other channels in the material will affect the output as well so you should not ignore these if you want a killer result.

Cool thanks...

Another question, when i quick render my stuff, the background is usually black... But how can i change it to white? or red? or yellow? Not adding a background pic, just the color...:buttrock:

its under rendering -> environment. up the top is a colour swatch - you can change it to whatever you like... :xtreme:

Got it, thanks again...
Now for anybody's opinion:

I've got this cyclinder with 10 segments. And i want to bend it to look like a curve. Wats the best way to do it? Using vertices and slowly move the vertices one by one? Or is there some other way? Thanks...

chECK OUT (whoops) Check out the 'Bend' modifier (you may need more height segents to get it lookin smooth) :airguitar:

Firstly Turtos, You are one lucky chap for using MAX.
Why is that lucky? Because Max software have the most comprehensive help file seach engine cum guide there is in the whole got damn 3d packages out there!

So, my advice is go read the help file first! then ask question. If you want to be good at what you do, you have to have your own style, dude.

So, take time out and go read the helpfile even if yours is a warez!!

Hmmm, I'll do that the next time then... Blame it on my laziness and carelessness...

Anyway, can someone tell me why i can only render the front part of my line segment and not the back part? I've made it renderable and converted it to an editable mesh yet when i render, the front part turns out well but not the back.

thx for helping...:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I've made the attached pic using lines...
But when i apply the material to the line, it only affect the boundaries but i wan it to cover the whole area. Any idea how i can do it? Some settings or wat? I've closed the spline...

it's only a line right now. There is nothing for max to render. Max only renders polygons, and right now, you have no polys. The line is only rendering because max is converting it to polys.

If you want to give this shape polys, just extrude it a little.

have not read the help data yet huh? You have been a bad boy now.:shame:

cheers:)

I agree with derelict.... READ the help. Read everythnig you can get your hands on.

to answer your line question. Before you convert to poly, make sure renderable is OFF and that it's just a spline. Then convert to poly.

If renderable is on then when you convert to poly, it will make a "tube" of your spline.... instead of making it flat like the shape.

sorry, that was confusing

Your not going to learn this fast so just take your time and read the HELP.

And if it's boring for you to read the help, you can simply search internet for tutorials and try to do them one by one (at least i'm learning in this way). it's fun and it helps to understand MAX better

looks like you've only modeled the edges, and have no polys to make up the faces...try switching on force 2 sided in the renderer or the material, but i reckon your just missing geometry so don't be suprised if this dont work..

oh and RTFM :D

Wonder if you guys know where a forum is set up?? That is to ask questions, in case you all didn't know. And I believe you all know that there are also various possible ways to go about doing things. And human suggestions are way much better than reading books. If i can wholey devote my time to read books and everyone else does it, i suggest the forums have no questions or help.

For the people who have helped with a solution, thanks. I've found one too. Apply a Material modifer, and i can now have the material affect the whole outline rather than the borders. And of course clicking on 2-side render was essential.:p

For those who have done NOTHING, but make non-constructive comments, I wonder if they know their stuff or are they un-willing to share their ideas on the topics.

Just a few thots after hearing so much. Thx again guys...

U c the problem is you're NOT even asking a proper question... there are no confusion in the question you have ask but question that are very very VERY basic. Base on your threads you have not even really respected the software you have purchased. What you're willing to fork out singapore thousands of dollars and NOT WILLING TO GO THROUGH THE BOOKS!??!? What a waste of bloody money! Unless yours are warez? May i ask how many books came with your MAX, if you don't mind me asking and how many cd discs came with it?

So please don't give that hi horse sh*t about what forums mean. The answer you are looking for is there in front of YOU!!! All you need to do is SEARCH!!! The question you asked are simply there in b/w with a clickable search button... its your own bloody personal teacher!!!

...there will come a time when you'll be all alone... see where that will get you.

signing OFF, dude.;)

hahahaha...
I'm not going to waste my time with someone like you...
And please, don't waste the forum space with your meaningless ideas...
I suggest you read yr signature. I think you fit that description...

This is insane! turtos, If you can't even look up the basic things you asked for on this forum, you should consider getting out of 3d...damn, there is a difference between beginner questions, and the questions you ask! :surprised

give him hell derelict,
turtos you seem to be looking for someone to teach you how to do 3d, but seem completely unwilling to bother trying to learn something for yourself, i suggest as meny others have stated that you try and find the info you are looking for yourself, its all out there and is somewhat easy to find. and extremely easy stuff that you are asking, try it and then if you have a problem understanding come and ask. But at least make an effort!!!
I know this is somewhat of an arrogant reply, but i dont give a damn, if anyone is wasting this forum space it is you.

iīve been doing this for three years now and I have learned one thing about learning how to work with Max:

Like with everything else in life, if you want to operate this program, you need effort, dedication and absolute commitment.
You donīt have a "Render Final Fantasy" button, it takes sweat and tears to make it work.
Donīt expect a teacher to descend from heaven and give you the secret of all things CGI in a golden plate.
You have to earn it, by studying hard.
Be humble.
Realise that youīre not the best and itīs extremelly likely youīll NEVER be the best.
Realise that youīre not the first one to undertake this journey and many like you have passed through these boards before and many many more like you will visit them one day.

Read the help files.
Read the tutorials.
Practice what they teach you.
Read. Practice. Read. Practice.
When you have done this long enough to form a basic understanding of the programīs capabilities, THEN you should bring your reasonable doubts in here.

There are extremelly talented professionals and hobbyists in this place willing to help.
Respect their knowledge, wisdom and experience.
Donīt erode their patience, because there are other students (like me) who wanna listen towhat they have to teach.
