Latest Update: Final Coloring: Gunship Attack

I decided to move the main gun over more. Didn't like it in the center of the piece. Also in order to have the gun fire show up I repainted the sky darker and warmer. And to give the canon some scale I expanded the architecture to the right. Basically I repainted alot of the image.

My idea for this challenge was show the viewer on back of a ship carrying canon guns defending against an areial attack.
I started this piece off in Photoshop using the pencil and airbrush tool. Since this first quick sketch the piece has changed considerably which I will talk about in my next post.

In this update I'll try to be thorough in how I got from my initial concept sketch to this stage. I'll try also to answer any questions anyone has.
I think the most obvious thing is the development of the canon gun. My inspiration for this weapon came from the rairoad guns from ww2. I started by sifting through my collection of photos that have metal parts to them. If you see the gear at the back of the gun you'll see what I mean. I draged and droped the photo on to a multiply layer in photoshop and began to paint in some of the color. The photos help me when I'm designing the piece but will be obliterated by the time I finish. Although I have a general idea of the different shapes I want, sometimes working this way pushes my designs in directions I couldn't have foreseen.
Once I got the one canyon done I simply repeated it and scaled it down.
I also have all my perspective lines hidden on a seperate layer which will be very helpful through out the finished piece.

Beautiful... I love the idea for the guns! Can't wait to see how you finish them off. The entire piece looks strong, colour choice is nice, I love the setting... really looking forward to seeing how this piece progresses!

Great start! I really like what you are trying to establish in this composition. It is a good angel too i think. :)

Well, the first thing I did was get some color in the sky. I needed to do this in order to really move foward in the design. I\\\'m still finding the design as I go and plan to resolve the ship and surrounding architecture. My next post will also have the exchange of fire which hopefully brings everything to life. I\\\'ll leave the last post for all final textures and light fx.
I hope to have some free time soon to spend talking with some of you. The artwork I\\\'ve seen here so far is tremendous.

This is a really powerful image, and your color choices are great. My only comment is that all of your perspective lines are heading exactly to the explosion, including the flying ship. I think it's too direct that way, and you would benefit from moving the explosion somewhere else in the general area instead of being exactly at the vanishing point. Also, it's a little too close to the edge of the painting, and my eye is drifting off of the page. Maybe a little bigger and dramatic as well? Just to make it a better payoff for the viewer. Great job!!
