CGTalk - Help on making textures

Hello.
I'm trying to realize a texture with Photoshop, following this tutorial: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/3d/tutorials/lespaul/sunburst.htm

I fast arrived at point 6, than I'm in trouble.
When I paint the layer 1 then I see all like in tutorials (point 7 when he says "result with layer 1 and 2"), but then I don't know how to arrive at the final image with the wood texture come from the bottom layer. If I make all the layers visible I don't see the layer with the wood texture. Where I do wrong?

did you set your layer mode to multiply on the top layer?

have you tried adjusting the opacity of layers 1 & 2, im guessing this is how he's brining the wood through then playing with the contrast to bring the wood out a little better???
