View Full Version : 8.5 and Nvidia 66.93 drivers don't mix
chikega 12-09-2004, 04:51 AM Well, I downloaded and installed the latest Nvidia drivers 66.93 and when I started C4d 8.503, the whole computer just rebooted - amazing! Tried to restart C4d again and I got a little further, atleast the program showed up this time, I panned around and ..... reboot again! I unistalled the new drivers and it works fine. The funny thing is ... that I need the latest drivers to address some OpenGL issues in Lightwave 8 ... I hate computers sometimes... argghh!!!

Did you uninstall the old ones first? I just updated my drivers to the same one you did and c4d works fine both R9 and 8.5.
If you install the new drivers over the old ones you get problems sometimes.

Yep, I sure did ... I even downloaded and installed C4d 9 demo and it's running great using the latest Nvidia Drivers. Maybe it's my card ... I have a new GeForce 6800GT with an after-market video cooler installed. Temps are within normal limits.
OK, I've disabled the Hardware Acceleration ... and I'm able to run 8.5. I've switched it from OpenGL to Software Shading and shut down the app. I've re-enabled Hardware Acceleration and restarted C4d, it seems to be running fine now. Mmmmm? Oh well, I guess I'll leave it like that for now ... afraid to touch it.
I did a cross-grade to C49 Mac version, so that's why I don't have 9 for the PC. :(

Strange, but there were quite a few OpenGL changes between R8 and R9. I've heard there are quite a few problems with the 6800 cards and various applications.
Hi,
unfortunatley the latest nvidia drivers seem to have some problems. Afaik nvidia is working on this.

Thanks for headsup, guys. Sometimes, I wonder about being on the bleeding edge of technology... always some issues with being on the front lines, so to speak. messiah also has issues with the latest Nvidia cards ...
I have an older Nividia GeForce card that works like a charm with all my apps.

I haven't had any problems with my 6800 GT (except for the Lightwave grid problem)
and 66.93.
If you're feeling somewhat adventurous there are beta drivers to try:

Also you might give guru3d.com a visit. There's more tweekin' goodies over there
including Cool Bits 2. After installing Cool Bits the overclocking feature that somewhow
dissappeared with the new drivers was turned back on. One of those mysteries I guess.

Yeah, I have some problems as well but with a quadro, and I upgraded to the new drivers to get Modo to finally work properly, but XSI has problems with the new drivers as well. Way to go Nvidia, I am getting really fed up with this.

This came up at cgarchitect.com regarding C9 crashing with an nVidia card from someone who had updated their driver.
Personally, I have not needed to update it and it has been working with everything using 52.16 on a Quadro750
This post is worth reading:

I would be extremely cautious about using the Beta drivers.
I have a Quadro FX3400 and tried using the Beta 70.41 drivers = instant crashes with C4D, as if my computer had a gastro-intestinal flu... ( Gastro FX...)
I was pissed off when i first got my new computer with the Quadro FX... I had a CB 0f 2300...
With the Release 67.20 ( the most recent for the Quadro), I now have a more respectable score of 3067CB, though its a far cry from the 4000CB that you get with a Athlon64/ATI X800 combo...
