Here's a model I'm working on of Cloud from Final Fantasy 7, though I'm using Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children as a reference. It's about 3900 triangles (not counting the sword) and has two texture maps, and one alpha map.

I'm looking for any/all crits, but was really looking for some crits on the face (or just making him look more like cloud in general).

It's rendered with 100% self-illumination, here's the pic...

Woow really cool I always wanted to model him too but I never started ^^

The model looks awesome, maybe the eyes are a bit too sharp.
The sword is also roxor

BTW: dose anyone know if ff7 advent children comes out in europe (Germany)?

i think it could use a lot of work - right now he looks like a chick. The eyes look like they have eyeliner around them. The muscle definition on the right arm isn't very realistic. All of the cloth looks like someting was just patternized or texturized in photoshop; the sword looks like it is made of plastic. His waist and hips are too narrow. His hands look a little goofy, but without a wireframe it is hard to crit. The lion crest thing looks really cool, but it would probably look better with a reflection map or just some very high specularity. The buckles and zipper are really lazy. The way that you've shaded the neck is contradictory to real neck muscle anatomy. His collarbones are too high. I like the geometry for the hair. All of the fabric textures are way too dark.

Most of the geometry is pretty good, but the texture is very rough, and needs a lot of work. If you want it to look like the movie or game I think the best route would be something subtle, like baked GI (or faked GI) - nothing too extreme or detailed.

While the textures look well realistic, they don't at the same time. They're really clean, and have very little depth to them. Mainly the clothing. The pants look very flat, as if they are merely a very dark grey. The shirt an belt look like repeating patterns. The sword also looks a bit flat. Try to give it some rust or maybe some highlights.

Your modeling seems ace though except for his torso. It seems to be pretty skinny compared to his upper body. Like he's wearing a corset. Hope this helps.

just curious, are you going for a "low-poly" version of the movie cloud? or are you trying to reproduce the advent children version? I assume you are going for a low-poly version by your triangle count. You got the basic first pass of the textures done now all you gotta do is start layering those flat one-tone color areas with some spec and shadow. Good modeling skills. Those FF faces can be very hard to imitate.

I think u should try to give more contrast to ur textures.

more highlights or dark zones.

But it's a cool model ;)

Adam - He does look like a chick but, so does the normal Cloud....The eyes have "eyeliner" cause its anime-ish can't do a whole lot about that, I supose I could try alpha mapped eyelashes or something. I'm still working on the arm and neck, I realize they suck at the moment, but I'm still trying...:P. The sword skin is just temporary (I threw it together real quick so I'd have something for the animations). His waist is really narrow because that's how he is in all my refs. I can't say much about the hands, since you didn't actually name any specific problem you see with them. I'm thinking about putting some cool shader on the wolf thingy, but I don't know how...so it's kinda hard (I know how in max, just not for in-game). Yeah the buckles and zippers are lazy, I'll go back and redo them :P.

Also I don't know what backed or faked GI is (I'm kinda a noob, I just taught myself to model and skin a little over a year ago).

Praetus/Chris F. - I guess I need to go fix the textures up, I'm gonna leave the paterns though. Considering most the time you won't be close enough to really tell anyways, I'm not too worried about them. I'll go back and make the texture less flat.

Pod - Yeah, I'm going for low poly version.

Here's a link to two of my refs, one showing the thin waist line, the other showing his girly face.

Thanks for all the crits everyone, it's really helpful!

Not sure how to do it in Max, but I know you can take a shader, like, some metal shader with high spec and then "bake" it into your existing file texture. Some ppl do this to create a base for skin, shadows, metal, etc. Then they bring it into PS for tweaks. Baking G.I. is simply taking the global illumination of the lights you've set up in your scene and "cooking" it into your file texture, again adding more depth to the textures. These are all good low-poly techniques. I've only experimented with this very little, as it requires some rendering knowledge.

Hope this helps,

Heres a bunch for resources (http://www.adventchildren.net)

You'll find plenty of hi-res images here to go from as well.

Well, that bake stuff will have to wait for a later model. I'm not very good at learning that kinda stuff...

In the end I didn't actually change that much, but I like the way it looks now. For the most part it'll stay like it is in this next pic, but if you see something that you really think I should change let me know.

By the way the hair going through the collar has been fixed, I just didn't re-render.

You should paint some shadow on the neck.

Nice, but doesn't Cloud have semi-glowing Mako eyes?

Here's a small pic.

the skin & hair don't seem to have a great deal of contrast between one another. he looks really pale & his hair looks really pretty bleached. maybe add some more yellow tones to it to help differentiate some. and could we possibly see a pic with the self illumination turned down just a bit? there's something about how there's not a lot of shadows on him right now & generally all the same colors that is a little weird but i can't really put my finger on it.
