View Full Version : Ceratosaurus Dino
Cathal 12-08-2004, 08:14 PM Here's a Ceratosaurus I just finished, came out to a total polycount of 7142. I could lower it by using alpha mapped teeth but I wanted to go for a higher poly feel. I'm having a real tough time with the texture seams in my UV map, if someone could help me with my unwrapping I'd really appreciate it.

Hi Cathal,
I assume this is a Tyranosaur like creature but I think this does need quite a bit more work on it, both in the layout of the mesh and the proportions of the dinosaur. There is a great tutorial at the top of this forum on mesh layout so I wont post my thoughts on that here.
Just to start with I think the thigh of the creature is very thin at the moment in comparison to the rest of the body and especially the rest of the leg. In addition of this the jaw doesn't look like that of a carinovre and you need to take a look at some reference images for prior artwork of this type of creature. The Jaw is typically represented as being much heavier, L shaped with skin across the sides.
Good luck with your model, the general shape is looking promising.

It's a good start, and it looks interesting. Unfortunately there seem to be a few large problems with the anatomy and proportions, but nothing that couldn't be fairly easily fixed. Are you doing this from memory?
1. The skull has a few issues. Take a look at this image (http://dinosauricon.com/images/ceratosaurus-ma.html) to see what I mean--compare it with your model. Since that's just a side view, I'll tell you right now that ceratosaurus had only one horn on its nose and a horn above each eye. Also, there should be a muscle attachment from the rest of the skull to the lower jaw a bit foreward of the jaw hinge. Take a look at the jaw of this T. rex (http://dinosauricon.com/images/tyrannosaurus-mh.html).
2. The legs are oddly proportioned. The thighs should be a triangle shape, basically. On your model they taper strangely towards the shin. If you can get your hands onto some chicken leg bones, they will really help with the proportions of the legs. If you can get the feet too, then you will have some excellent reference to work from. Robert Bakker, a paleontologist, claims to have dissected more chicken legs than anybody in the world. It's because they have the same proportions as T. rex leg bones.
3. Just work on trying to make everything the right length and thickness, and then you will have a great starting point for the smaller details. Make the tail the right length in comparison to the body, then add the different ridges and muscles, etc.
Well, your work has finally given me an idea for my first serious model. Thank you. I'm going to start on a carnotaurus sastrei. I'll begin tomorrow. :D
