Hello again!

We continue working, when we can, in our projects with Dr. Maxwell... This time we have made a facial animation for 10 seconds club (http://www.10secondclub.net/). The audio is from "Liar, liar", voice of Jim Carrey... is not exactly the voice that we are searching for Doc, but we thought that could be a very good animation exercise because this audio is extremetely fast :)

The animation is rendered with Maxwell render too. The lighting for this test was a little more difficult than the other test: 2o min./frame in a dual xeon 2.8 Ghz.

Very, very nice. I love it! http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

One thing I noticed, though; whenever he says an S word, like 'speeding' or 'stopping', it looks as if he's saying got something in his mouth that's not letting him make the S sound. I'm not sure how you could fix this, and I'm not sure if it's just me. Maybe it's that his lips don't touch each other enough. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/shrug.gif

Anyways, really cool. I want to see more. :D

He is alive!:bounce:

I´d saw the whole character and found it great!
The animation keeps the hi quality level!

Congratulations! It´s a very difficult lip sync to do, and it´s working great!
Very good animation job!

Although the shot is very very beautfull, If I had to suggest something would be about the silhouette of the face (more precisely the cheeks), that could have some more stretch and squash deformation along the speech! But this is a style opinion, and your choice was just great!

Keep going guys!

See ya!

Nice job! The lipsync is realy good, but there are some things that caught my attention, like for example you rotate the head only in two axes, and forgot the third one, which can add quite a lot on the acting. Also the huge rotations from left to right and back don't make much sense to me. He would look much more expressive in my opinion,if you animated his eyes and eyebrows a bit more.
Great job nevertheless. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

So where is the vain bulging out of his head towards the end?

Just kidding. Absolutely brilliant. Very nice articulation, and I love what you did with the inbetweens of key poses.

The lighting and texturing definitely adds that final touch.

2 Thumbs up

Well done! Shading is great, lipsync is great

The eyes need more work though (have to agree with Dennik). I can't see any motivation in the movements of his eyes...like I can't see the personality of this guy. If you just hide the eyepart with a piece of paper everything looks really nice.
Maybe you should think more about why he is looking in specific direction. Cause eye movements have always a reason.

Just a thought....anyways great piece!

Cheers!

Very nice :)

The only thing that stands out with me and obviously something that is out of your hands due to the nature of the audio is the actual speed of the character...near the middle of his rant his mouth is moving so fast that I lost track of the phonemes and actually wondered what he was really doing!

To second what Goro said as well...some more eye movements would be really nice...he just seems to have a very glazed over look staring off into the distance. Takes away from the character in his frantic state...Outside of that the character just looks wonderful, from the skin right to the hair and eyebrows, top notch job!

Hey Tack, I'm really interested in this Maxwell renderer. What would happen to a character like Dr. Maxwell if you crank down the available timeframe to 2-3 mins per frame? In other words, can you use speedhacks/turn some things off if you can live with lesser GI? thx.

Thanks a lot for your comments!!

I agree with you about the eyes animation, i am not really happy with the result. My original idea was animate the entire character, with his body acting, but i only could dedicate a couple of days to animate this crazy sound, and i only had time to finish the lipsync (it was enought difficult and ear this audio 200 times is really boring) and a bit of his acting.

About Maxwell renderer, in keytoon is Jonatan who knows perfectly how works, fortunately i dont make more lighting :D .
I can say you than Maxwell is still an alpha version, people are forgetting this and are saying a lot of things without sense. The render times are better and better in each release, i think maxwell will be a very powerfull render engine. I cant say what it will make, but it promise a lot ;)
Anyway i will say Jonatan than write more in technical posts about Maxwell, i have seen the teapots scene that people is testing and i see crazy times, he can render this scene in a very best time.

Hello. First off I am very impressed with the range and variety in the way you make Maxwell's jaw drop and the overall lipsync. However I have a few problems with the blendshapes in general. One, the nose never moves. During his rant Maxwell looks like he should be snarling or sneering and his nostrils and entire nose for that matter never budge. Two, the cheeks seem off. I think the reason for this is that the cheekbones are clearly visible and nothing is moving over them. I would have the whole lower half of his face being affected by his mouth movements. Look in a mirror and speak the lipsync you did for Maxwell while focusing you attention on those two areas. There should be some movement there.

Once again, nice piece overall and I really enjoyed it. It definitely has a lot of character and exaggeration.

Sincerely,
Chris
