View Full Version : Imperial sentinel walker (Warhammer 40k)
YZRob 12-07-2004, 09:18 AM This is the 2nd model done in max5 (the 1st being a chess set). I started modeling it after watching a good mech tutorial at 3d_palace. Instead of copying the tutorial version I went by some warhammer 40k pics I got off the web althought alot of it I had to improvise do to the lack of good refernce pics. I think it turned out pretty well.I am now faced with texturing it lol. If anyone has any Ideas of how I would go about texturing this thing I would greatly appreciate it. I am kind of stuck on how to start the texturing process.

Definitely a great job - especially on your second model! Texturing will be tricky at first but I'm sure if you picked up modeling that fast, you'll get a handle on texturing pretty quick too.
I was gonna say, without even knowing how to texture in Max - you can start painting the basic shapes in photoshop, or whatever you prefer. Just take screen captures of the wireframe to use as a guide and start painting the individual pieces - like some of the panels on the side and whatnot.

I finally had a little time to try to learn some texturing. This is what I have so far. i know the paint & dirt map still need a little work but I was excited just to get the textures on there lol. One question I do have is... This texture is a blend material - how can I get a metal material underneath? Probably a dumb newb question but I thought I'd ask anyway.I believe texturing is much harder than modelling lol. Comments &/or suggestions welcome. Thanks for looking.

Here is the mech with full textures. The next step is to model a driver and the terrain and then animate. Thanks for looking!

I think I forgot to mention, this was modeled in 3dsmax and textures done in photoshop. Thanks again for looking.

Ow, looking good, looking good :applause: :buttrock:
I'd change a bit on the leg pistons though, the materias is too matte, pistons are usually pretty shiny. Hmmm but since they can't rectract fully into the housing maybe you can make a material that's shiny and oily untill about-half way and then a dirty bottom part? Same with the ball of the ankle, i'l try making a material that's shiny on the part of the ball that's touched by the 'toe clamps' and dirty on the other parts. Y'know just omagine grabbing one foot and swing it around, rotating as far as it goes and that's the part that should be shiny.
I likle the material, it's lookign really good, but somehow i think it'd look better with some more paint that flaked off, revealing bare metal or base paint
