good call - I often think some models lose their appeal when textured. Grey always looks good if you have put the effort into the modeling, which you most certainly have

Great work!

Very cool modeling, the problem with leaving it Greyscale is that it becomes like a black and white photograph,so you have to treat it like one.Good and thoughtfull atmosphereic lighting should bring out all the really nice shapes that you have there.

If you light it so that the scene looks believable and someone just took a b/w phot of it ,i think that would look really cool.

Or maybe just add hints of color, like the wings could be see through and translucent.
Reference being dragon fly wings. When you go mono tone, your modeling matters and what matters even more is your difference in material,ie what is wood ,what is cloth etc.
This can all be done with good use of bump maps to enhance your model.Thats if you keep it grey.Specular plays a huge deal in a render like this.

Just some thoughts.Very good modeling.

Thats what i like ....a great scene without any texture but great looking ... i hate it when i try to figure out a good texture and all tell me that i made it not good. So i realy like this :)

Modeling is great! Can you talk about your process, which type of modeling you did? Nurbs? Sub-D? WIP images would be nice too.

This is such a lovely, whimsical picture. I agree with making it look like a black and white photo, it'd look fantastic.
I'd also love to know about your modelling practices. Do you model your characters first and then rig them, or model them in pose?

Oh my... that's a good one :] Grayscale isn't that bad, but I'd really like to see some background other than just... well... a wall. It might give some depth to the scene and make it more "non-WIP-look". Details are simply top-level. Congrats...

I also agree, adding dramatic lighting could help, and might push those shapes out further. I'd enjoy seeing this textured, if you plan to. Excellent amount of detail. Great work!

I really like this. I did a search for Freeform Concepts and found a very interesting site about this software and haptic research. Could you explain if there was any device you used to create these models and how it worked? Was it as intuitive as it looks? It looks very promising. Short of something like Z-Brush, this appears to be a nice line of 3D modeling research/practice. I noticed one of those fairies was a promo pic on that site also. Do you work with the company?

i d like to see it like that to,did it but not hapy, going on on my next projekt..
i am a figure designer so i try to get all off my textures in the modeling, outherwise i
cant get it out in repro prototype.....thanks and i maybye go back later to try to conwinse
myself that it looks better whith textures than greyscale.

i did freehand sculpting in freeform concept ho works with voxels, shek there site on
www.sensable.com
start whith a couple off blobs and then go crazy(freeform).
cuting up a figure in bits(freeform) and repose them whith out bones(cinema 4d).
merging bits and smothing in freeform is like puting water to water.
rendering(cinema 4d)...
maby sending a pic tot to wip...
i hope i quoted a quople off people whith that.
sorry for my spelling, a swed in uk...

Wonderful piece. I love the concept, the modeling and the poses. I'd love to see it with textures, too. I also like suethsayer's ideas about adding variation with materials and bumps if you want to keep it grayscale.

too fun to look at for sure. My new background thanks. It is similar to a project i am starting, it reminds me of a picture from a fairy story, how you might miss little ghouls or trolls or something if you dont search really carefully, so nice man. BEAUTIFUL!

i used freeform concept to make these models.
i could say simply, wery simple to use if you now how to sculpt,u have touch feeling on your
model so you can feel awery bit of it all around and distort(tug)(carv)(smudge)and so on
whithout shanging view if you like.
voxels are wery powerfull whith merge pieces(boole) wery heavy objects in secs.
same goes with smoth carv and so on.
it creates heavy poly objects but its a wery good reduce for export in there.
try it and you love it..
i dont work for sensable but was a beta test driver...

great models .. love those wings :)

though I understand you want to keep it like a sculpture and not go into "painterly", real scene texturing, I think it would greatly benefit in a more elaborated lighting and ~surfacing~ , which would definitely emphasize the volumes and enhance the picture. (simply put : the basic shader and harsh shadow maps don't do your work justice)

I really like this. But i totally agree with the rest here that this would be so much mor with some wicked textures to match the rest, real nice,I think it's a sharp piece of work, but textures will get it to the highest of levels.Still like this a whole lot though.:buttrock: :buttrock:

Incredible.

Think you should leave it without textures (although perhaps a little less shiny). The composition works so well.
