View Full Version : Character: Myself as a Kid
Tukata 12-07-2004, 04:22 AM Hey there everyone. I'm still working on the texture for this one (messed up horribly on the arms and legs today). This is a caricature of me as a little kid. I used to watch Top Gun a lot and when I did I'd wear an old football helmet and my dad's dust mask pretending I was one of the pilots. Crits and Comments welcome!

I am laughing my ass off looking at that big mask... I love the model in concept, really funny idea. But I think the legs look a teenie bit off. it could be the way they are posed...

thanks =) could it be that right now his knees are pretty locked right now? I didn't bend them when I modeled them (my mistake) so they're kind of unrealistically straight at the moment. Or maybe its the sandals which I'm ditching for soxs, they're kind of mis scaled as compaired to his feet cause I just put them on real quick to see how they'd look.

Wow, this is great stuff! :scream: HAHAHA! be funny what kind of game it would be in?
I think the knee problem is just the pose, but we wont know until you pose him..

I really just made him to give me something new to animate. I got tired of using the same models and I wanted the modeling/texturing practice. It'd look pretty funny in UT2k4 running around with a big gun but I dont know if I'm going to go to the trouble of setting him up for that.
I don't think it looks cartooney enough, if ye know what I mean. It looks more like an adult body with an oversized head than a kid's body with an oversized head. Messing around with the basic proportions seems like the best way to fix this, methinks. Biggers hands and feet, shorter legs, maybe.

I really like the delicate touch of the textures. Soft and without any hard blacks. Could you post a sheet. Would be nice to get a better look at them.
Very nice work!
btw, joust3d is looking better and better. Can't wait to play a beta. How does one get involved or is the team finallized? I can model/texture/rigg/animate in Maya and Motion Builder.

here is the wip shot of the texture, as you can see I'm still working on the arms and legs. This is my 5th texture ever so human flesh is still posing a major challenge for me. The guys at polycount have been a help but most of them are so used to texture really buff defined guys and they want me to put in a lot of contrast which lacks from the musculature of a child. I'm going to keep working at it, in my infinite idiocy I made the texture seam follow the back of the arm and leg instead of the inside so I have to work with a map broken right down the tricep and calve which is making it hard to get the shapes right. Oh well, wont do that again =/

As for Joust I'm sure they're still looking for help, I've had to neglect them severly in order to graduate college and I really feel horrible about it. Great group of guys and the leader Mr.D is awesome. If you'd like to help out I'd post on their forums, they'll probably want to see some work of yours but they need animators badly I believe.

Thanks for the info. Just a quick tip, to fix some bad seem placement(kinda a dirty "cheat"), go to www.righthemisphere.com (http://www.righthemisphere.com) and download the DeepPaint 3d demo. They have this pretty cool feature called "projection paint" where you can use the clone stamp/healing brush thingy live and directly on the model(supports .obj and .3ds files I believe). The new texture info then gets transferred directly onto your psd file. Just a suggestion. It's helped me fix some sucky uv layout.
Thanks for the joust info. I'll post some animation for them to review after the holidays.

yeah maya has it's 3dpaint tool which I use when my texutre is all done to clean up the seams (like you'll see in the shirt and somewhat on the legs). It's a pretty clumsy tool but it works =)

Would you mind sharing that script with me, or point me to it? Hard to get good Global Illumination in Maya without doing lots of work. I'm using ambient lights with no ambient shade to fake it a little.
Thanks,

www.highend3d.com go to scripts and then to Shading and Lighting there are a couple of GI scripts there. the one I use is Global_Illumination v1.1 (gi11.zip) but I'm not sure if that was is still on there. If you find it get it, it's the easiest one to use IMO.

Beautiful work, there. It came out real nice, imho. I wouldn't change a thing. Honesty, I think you've got the right look as it is! Now you gotta skin him and get him in some poses at least if you don't plan on animation, but I know you've got the talent for it(animation) based of the work I've seen on your site.

yeah I made him as a character to animate so I'm going to rig him up and do some stuff eventually. probably not soon because I have to pack and move and then *hopefully* start my internship. And thanks for the praise, I'm satisfied with it but I still have lots of room for improvement.
