Title: Maxforums.org Modelling Tournament Winner (5 Pics)
Name: Mike Lambert
Country: Canada
Software: 3ds max, Brazil r/s, Photoshop

***I haven't posted anything here in a while so this new upload thing is a little new to me. Hopefully this is acceptable.***

Since mid-September I have been competing in a 3D Modelling Tournament (http://www.maxforums.org/thread.aspx?tid=259207&r=71) (5 Rounds, winner moves on)

Each round had a new theme that we had to use in our work. We had between 1-2 weeks for each round. I won all 5 rounds and was chosen as the "Best of the round" each time.

So without further delay, here are my winning entries.

Round 1 - "It grew from a teapot"

http://www.shinynewmachine.com/gallery-temp/Round1-Teapot.jpg

The only rule for round 1 was that we needed to include a teapot in some way. I decided to go for a more literal interpretation of the theme and created these Venus Fly Traps busting out of the teapot.

Round 2 - "It has an interesting shadow"

http://www.shinynewmachine.com/gallery-temp/Round2-Shadow.jpg

For this round, the resulting shadows of the objects were to be our main focus. I decided to go with something along the lines from the shadow scenes in the Austin Powers movies. The caption was added to make it blatantly obvious what was going on.

Round 3 - "Alone in the Superunknown"

http://www.shinynewmachine.com/gallery-temp/Round3-Supernatural.jpg

This round was a little more open ended, which actually made it tougher to come up with an idea. We were simply required to come up with something "supernatural", which could have been almost anything. Normally I do a lot of mechanical modelling, so I decided to go for something completely different and design a more organic looking scene.

Round 4 - "Big? No dude, that thing's HUGE"

http://www.shinynewmachine.com/gallery-temp/Round4-Huge.jpg

The title explains this one pretty well. For this round, we had to make something unbelievably huge. I wanted to turn this one around a little. The kids are amazed at the size of the fish they caught, meanwhile they don't see the monster behind them.

Round 5 - "Ah-ha! So that's how they did it"

http://www.shinynewmachine.com/gallery-temp/Round5-Basement.jpg

Round 5 had a twist to it. We could model anything we wanted, as long as we wrote a tutorial on how it was done. At the time I was working doing renovations on a basement so I figured that was as good a subject as any for the scene. The accompanying tutorial explains every step of the creation of the basement scene:

(Forgive the look of the pages, it's just a temp layout as I'm currently re-designing my website)

I'd love to hear your comments, and would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

I really like this picture, especially the third (the shadows are very funny! http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/clap.gif).

Round 4 - "Big? No dude, that thing's HUGE"
This one is great! Simple style, but the lighting, staging, modeling totally fits it. This has A LOT of potential for animation. Any plans to do something with them? The characters are really similar to Don Hertzfeldt's style (Rejected, Billy's Balloon) which might be why I'm so drawn to it.

Your style is like a CG version of his style. Check it out at http://www.bitterfilms.com/rejected.html

excellent work all around!

the 4th one really reminded me of Invader Zim almost instantly, but I do see the bitter films look as well.

great job and congrats on winning all 5 rounds!

Thanks for the comments so far everyone. I appreciate it :)

The fishing one is my favourite of the bunch too. It's nice to see you guys picked up on the influences (Vasquez/Invader Zim, and Don Hertzfeldt). I didn't mention it right away, because I wanted to see if anyone would pick up on it. Guess I did something right then ;) I love those two animation styles, so I wanted to see what a cross between them would look like. I'd love to do an animation with these characters some day. I've already written a back story for them, so maybe I can start an animation based on that. Something to think about for the future at least.

onelung: I graduated from the Digital Media Arts program at Seneca in Toronto, Ontario this summer. Since then I've had a couple industry jobs and am about to be starting a new one soon. I've done everything from modelling and animation for cartoons to particle fx and compositing for live action movies.

Any more questions or comments are more than welcome. I'll keep you guys updated on the possibility of an animation using the characters from #4.

Thanks again guys. I've decided to do an animation with the two character from the fishing scene, and am now in the pre-production/planning stage of it. In the near future I'll start a thread in the WIP section and detail the progress of the animation.

Great idea. Once you start the thread, post a link in this channel so other people know where it is.

Good Luck.
