Great start . And those rims look perfect :). Not sure but I think the front is bit too square. If you understand what I mean. But I'm not sure since I'm not big fan of mk2 model ;).

Thanks Pete !

I've had many owners give me reference photos to compliment the plans I have

So .. I have tweaked the nose :

like your other car, this is looking fantastic... seems to me like you have overtaken/copied some elements from your "old" car into this one...

can we see some wires?

Thanks.

It is still very early, but I learned so much from the other car that I know how to make this one more easily - and quicker :) Although, this time it is all smooth flatter surfaces so I need to be very clean.

The only thing transfered from my old model are the wheels - and the number plate ! :) The shell is entirely new from scratch.

Here is the bare mesh :

Which gives me (with a quick TurboSmooth - iterations 2) :

Yeah man, i'm digging your escorts. The old ones were by far and away the best! please tell me you don't intend on modelling a newer one!.....ug.

Your modelling looks really crisp and clean. I like. Nothing to crit at all at the mo. What environment are you thinking about putting this one in?

Looking nice and clean. Lots of nice detalis too. Its good to see some older cars around here.

Only crit is it looks like something is coming through the body just behind the back window in the rear shot. Might be the window seal or something not sure but it doesnt look like its meant to be there.

Keep the posts coming...

Thanks guys.

That little black ear thing is actually part of the rear window surround and drip rail. It is not finalised yet - still has hard edges.

Here is a shot of the car with the bonnet opened a little to show the Cosworth (borrowed from my MK1) :

http://www.dmmultimedia.com/escort_mk2/mk2_060.jpg

The interior is just temporary - I am making the correct fishnet Recaros and RS Custom trim now :)

Wow thats looking awsome.. I hope I can finish up My Datsun half as good as that..

Great work. I think the tyre tread is letting the whole model down a bit and the materials under the bonnet could use a little bit of work...

Thanks Luke,

I have been working on the tyres. They have a new textue. But I will probably re-model them.

Still need to create the interior (just used the seats from my MK1 but want a set of fishnet recaros).

The engine is not final. I will be making a BDA / X-Flow and Pinto. :)

Hi, I have one very small crit: those rims and low profile rubber look far too "modern" for the car: the previous 4 spoke alloys are probably closer, and, it could be the angle of your renders, but I think the front wheels would hit the wheelarches when steering.

I love the paint and environment, wish I could get close to that, very nice

thats a beautiful model. i love it when people model old classic cars :D ..btw i like the dark blue color most (the last render). keep it up.

Thanks for the feedback, guys :)

d.c.bounce: Yup, those larger rims are a tad fanciful, but I have actually seen them on an Escort. I kinda like them - it is a nice juxtapostion to see an ol' timer wearing sharp new rims.

This image is of the iconic RS2000 MKII, which had a special polyeurathene nose cone. Seen here riding on the stock rims.

Still haven't worked on the interior yet !

It was correctly pointed out to me by RS2000 owners that the front was too flat so I adjusted that :) :

what blueprints did you use to make the car.. if you did

SkipSkovhugger

Very nice Escort! (Good to see other Ford guys here)

The only crit I have, is your YBD engine. It just looks too wide. If you look at pics of them (from Sierra and Escort Cossie's), you can see that the cylinderhead looks quite a bit thinner on the real one. But it could also just be the angle of your render.

But your car is just.... Wow!..

MartenU

Sweet model and very good renders, but on that photo the car looks kind of big compared to those people in the backround.

Pete81
02-23-2005, 10:07 PM
Wow! Very good. I like especially that black Rs2000 with those 4spoke rims :). And that white with composition is VERY good too. Only thing that I would say is that those 8spoke "minilites" are bit strange looking. I think that they should look like this http://www.minilite.de/compomotive/ML.jpg.

I have seen those wheels many times with old escorts and they fit very nicely :).

But overall absolutely pro quality job .

dave-3d

Thanks for the feedback guys

Shiver : I eventually found some blueprints that I think were for a model kit. Would you like a copy ? They are for the flat-front, I modelled the RS2000 nosecone from reference images.

SkipSkovhugger : I ran the size and placement of the Cosworth Block past a lot of owners that have actually performed this transplant - and they gave me tips and crits about it. I'll try and get another angle to show it clearer.

MartenU : It is probably just a point of perception, I have included the original photo I took below - I had to digitally remove the Jaguar first (That is real !). If anything, I think my model may be on the small side.

Pete81 : Yup, I have been asked and asked to make the classic Minilite style - so last night after seeing another request I sat down and finally made a set ! The ones I had modelled are very BLING - But i have seen them fitted to a few MK1s. See below for the real thing. But I have also included a render with the new Minilites :)

holy smokes that is suuuuch a sweet render and the mkII escort rules as well. so nice to see a car that aint a surpa or a skyline that so many muppets are showing on these pages *ahem*

I've started modelling the mk4 RS turbo (seeing as I own one - I've got quite good reference hehe!) as I've always loved that car. Have to get a wip up soon.

fantastic work man - any more of the interior done?

Can i ask you few things... please please could you tell me your rendering settings because i am pissed of with the amount of time i have spent on my car renders and still not satisfied even 50%.

As i am new, could you also tell me how to do the headlight textures...???

Will be really gr8 if you can reply to this one. pls also send me a p.m if possible

dave-3d

Hi.

cgnetworks_abhi :

Had a quick look - your Audi looks good for a first model.

Well, my settings are quite basic.

I render with Mental Ray from 3D max 7. I use 1 skylight, 1 MR spotlight and a few standard omnis for specular kicks.

In my settings:

Skylight set to 0.75, with standard colour.

MR spotlight set to 0.5 with a slightly yellow hue, and Area Light Parameters set to rectangle 20 x 20.

The Omnis are set from 0.9 to 0.2 with standard colour and cast shadows ray trace - but with Diffuse unticked in the Advanced Effects roll-out. This means they only add subtle specular highlights.

I set Final gather ON in the Mental Ray render panel with a setting of 300 (for these test images, sometimes as high as 6000, and min,max set on for final production renders).

Final gather will activate the equivalent of Global Illumination.

GI works with the SKylight and MR to give nice realistic shadows. Look at the shadow under my car - there is fairly sharp edge to the shadow (cast by the MR SPotlight, which you can blur by setting the Rectangle settings) but then the shadows intensify under the car (GI effect). In a normal Scanline render the shadow intensity remains pretty linear/constant.

This effect is very noticeable if you don't use a spotlight. I wanted an outdoor sunlight apearance so that is why I have used the spotlight.

I think the tweaking of the materials on the car itself is very important, at the very least have a Fresnel Falloff for Raytrace. And something to reflect. HDRI can be used but also abused. Try to get the settings right with a standard image for reflection then you can gain from the subtle depth an HDRI adds later.

Here is a pic of my lighting :

http://www.dmmultimedia.com/escort_mk2/00_lighting_01.jpg

I've had a close look at my wheel and adjusted settings for wheel and tyre. But I must say the effect on the wheel is what I want. It is covered in a shiny silver paint, but not like modern cars with 2 pack paint and mettalic finish. My other Bling wheels are more anisoitropic. :) But thanks for pointing it out. It made me closely focus on the wheel and tyre

Here is the new Render :

Hi this car does rock, but i have a comment about it's front.
On the picture you posted: http://www.dmmultimedia.com/escort_mk2/mk2_114_big.jpg the holder of the 2 foglights are coming from nowhere. It is next to the license plate. And if i see it right, it does intersect with the small black bumper too. If this error were on a low quality model, i wont say anything, but your car DOES ROCK, and i want it to be perfect. :)
