"The "Cell" processor that will power the next version of the PlayStation game console will also be adaptable for advanced scientific research, but you won't have to be a rocket scientist to program it.
That is the pledge of one of the chief architects of the Cell, jointly developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, who on Friday sought to allay fears that the chip would create huge programming challenges for game developers just starting to learn their way around the complex circuitry that powers the current PlayStation 2."

I think this part seems most interesting:

The companies said earlier this week that they plan to begin test production (http://news.com.com/PlayStation+3+chip+on+track/2100-1006_3-5470132.html?tag=nl) of Cell chips early next year, with the first Cell-based products--workstation PCs for computer graphics production--set to arrive late in the year.

Sony touted the PS2 as a potential workstation, but never panned out. I think the cell chip would be better applied to embedded platforms ie HDTV.

I dont see how a proprietary cell based graphics workstation can compete with current pc's and graphics hardware (Remember SGI?).

Comparing SGI (MIPS, Itanium) with IBM (x86, POWER, and now Cell)?

IBM has lately had the nice habit of opening-up their hardware specs so that it is easier to work with their technology. While I wouldn't expect much from Sony, I'm more than a little psyched to see what comes from IBM.
