CGTalk - Alpha Channels

In order to get a surface to look exactly like you want it seems like the use of alpha channels and maps are needed. Ok, but how to you make the alpha channel map in photoshop

The folowing two movies show this pretty well but does not go into the how

I can't watch the movies from here, but an alpha image is just a black and white image, with white where you want it to be opaque, and black where you want to see through.

I don't know what else to tell you, but if you have any other questiosn, let me know.

Ya, I know alpha channels act similar to masks ... black / white image but making them specific to the exact place where you want something to show is what I am getting at

Look and read at page 517 in inside lightwave 7, that might give you an idea.
