:p

Like the Adobe's products for Mac and Windows, where you can take a file to and from each platform, I was wondering if it's possible to do the same with Maya in both platforms.

For instance, let's say I make a kick-a$$ model in Maya 4 running Windows xp, can I save it and then open it, and run it in Maya 3.5.1 running Mac OS-X then save it again, and run it back on my Maya 4 on Windows XP.

Any feedback would be a help, thanks,

Ace

The question is can you open a Maya 4 model in Maya Mac OSX 3.5.1 . I dont think you can. Cant go backwards, only forwards...I think. I remember not being able to open a Maya 3 file in Maya 2.

Cross platform isnt a problem as far as i know. Ive transfered Maya binary/ascii files from Unix to Win NT with no problems.

when all else fails....trial and error.:D

SHIT!!!!!!!!
I made a terrible mistake...it doesn't, I actually import scenes from maya 4 to 3.5 in different data formats like obj and rib , not the scenes...I regret all I said...sorry :(
You can open 3.5 scenes in 4.0 obviously but it's kinda tricky if they are binary files.

I don't know why I said that, and I actually can't believe I said that being a maya macosx beta tester for such a long time. I guess I got confused since I've heard so many complaints about how to open 3.5 in 4.0.
But still, 3.5 works almost exactly the same as maya in other platforms and has some features available in maya 4.

Sorry for the this terrible mistake...I dont even want to remeber this. At least I realized on time.

I dont think anyone will hold it against you. I guess the no backwards only forward still stands.

I think there is a MEL "stripper" utility on highend3d.com that will supposedly convert Maya 4 ASCII files to Maya 3. I recall in runs on Win NT and is called something Maya423. This may have some value to you.

I feel ashamed anyway and I apologize...That was the most shitty piece of obvious inaccurate information I have ever provided. It never happened before and will never happen again.
It happens all the time with magazine and internet articles out there but I just can't tolerate inconsistency and lack of accuracy of any kind, specially coming from myself. I guess there's always a first time.
All I can do is recognize my error.
Sorry guys.

bbennet> I'm gonna check that script and see how it works, if it works fine it might be of great value.

:D

Hey it happens to the best of us.

I'm just glad people replied to my post.

So what if I used the Maya423 script, that's in Highend, export a Maya scene that way, will it work on the MAC.

Probably...I'll check it and post the results if one of you guys don't do it first. And this time with detailed and PRECISE information.

The mel script works fine...It's a very simple procedure, I wander how I never thought of this before.
There's one thing though, you gotta resave the file when in maya 3 and it must be .ma (ASCII)...then just open it in maya 3.5.1 for macox and Bingo!...you got it!

Note: Maya Unlimited files have some limitations in macox since only Maya Complete is available for this os.

Thanks bbennet !
