Viper 08-29-2002, 03:54 AM How does that Reactor mess works? It is any good for clothing simulations on a character?

Yeah, well...erm...I don't have it yet. That's why I am asking, so I know if it's worth getting it :D

Reactor Cloth is a simple system, not something you'd want to use for character clothing. That's what Stitch is for. It's both a very powerful cloth simulator as well as a garment/stitching tool (a la Maya Cloth).

*edit* Duh! Should have thought it was for Digimation :D Thanks anyway :)

Okay...while I was at Blur we tested all kinds of cloth tools and Stitch worked the best for character clothing. It was also the only tool that helped with modeling clothes. Clothing sim for characters is abit tricky in that you really want to maintain a uniform triangle size along the topology of the mesh. Stitch handles this as well as seams.
Reactor Cloth has a future, but I think its current implementation is rather simplistic. I think it's fine for general cloth in MAX, like flags and drapery, maybe even the sails of a ship, but the original post on this thread was about cloth tools for characters - something I just don't think Reactor is ready for.
Eventually I think they will get there with Reactor Cloth. The one advantage it has over the other cloth tools is that it can be integrated with the entire Reactor dynamics toolset - something that opens lots of possibilities. I'm not trying to harp on Reactor, just stating the facts from my production point of view. I have total faith in the Havok guys to make it a top-notch tool.

first off I just want to say that this is the 5th thread I've looked at where someone asks for info on some software and some idiot responds, "I'm sure the info your looking for is in the manual that came with it." It's that kind of ignorance that makes people suck.
But back to the real matter at hand, There are two other cloth simulators out there that I have not seen mentioned or was not paying attention when they were, but here they are.
Kelsuis cloth is good for character clothing because you can turn any mesh into a cloth object and you have a slew of options with it, and you car attach certain vertexes to a mesh or bone like a waistline for a skirt, that you cannot do with reactor. downside is it is somewhat unstable (at least the version I have) just save often. $500
Sim cloth I have not tried but have heard much praise about it. Probably because it's free.
well thats my two cents, hope it helped you out some.

I resent this. This question is often asked as alot of people are using hacked warze versions of the software. Ill admit that I shouldnt have asked that here as my train of thought was asuming that this person was asking how to use Max's reactor. Its apparent that they may have simply been asking for information of cloth simulation in general.
So Ill admit, I was outta line here, but in general its not ignorance that encourages these questions...its generaly tiredness of people asking about how to use a feature that is clearl;y documented.

I wouldn't call that response idiotic or ignorant. There are hundreds of posts here & on similar forums from people who could find the answers they are after from just RTFM, thats why there is an anagram for it :) Manuals are quite often the best place to start - so that would sound like good advise to me! Reactor has been on the Max CD's since version4, so the reference is there too. The majority of max users have version 4.x so it would be fine to assume the person has access to that unless they provide more information to the contrary... Cam helps out a lot of people here & on the Discreet webforum, I'm sure he's trying to help the guy - people learn a lot more if they nut something out themselves rather than having everything handed to them on a platter!
[edit] whoops, too slow...

And on a larger picture it is often these wars between RTFM and percieved warez users and actual legit users that eventually kill the board because of divisions and fustrations.
simply try and find the answers on your own, the main reason is often you gather so much more info than you thought you would have, often on subjects you hadn't even thought to ask....
and always try and keep personal feelings out of it, we all may not get there at the same time, we all may not be at the same level of expertise, but the goal is the same,,, to learn or to give back what we learn.
after your pursuit of knowledge, if the answer still eludes you then come here and ask!
