Are there any tutorials/ images showing good proper weights for joints, ie elbow, and area/shoulder area etc? I am having trouble setting my weights to look like I want the to. I can set the "red" weights fine, but everything else I dont know what to do.

I'm not sure if there are tutorials but I can tell you this - adjusting weights in max is tricky and they don't always work as advertised. Sometimes when you manually adjust vertex weights, the vertex appears to lock at 0 or 1 but nothing in between, making it bastard hard to get any decent kind of deformation.

Try resetting that vertex, or maybe resetting the whole envelope.

At the beginning, just aim to get a fairly smooth overlap with each envelope. That done, adjust the envelopes till it looks more like how you want, then adjust the vertices if you have to.

I use manual vert weighting for problematic areas, not quite sure what snortpigs problem is?

1. Change sub-object to vert
2. Assign vert(s) as no blending to the first link (rigid/deformable.. whatever)
3. Change blending mode to n links, and assign the second link
4. Lock vert(s)
5. Use Type-in weights to adjust the blend values

Hey,

If you are able to spend some cash i would advise on getting jason busby's book mastering the art of production with max4, it has a comprehensive section on bone setup and skinning, envelopes and all the rest of the stuff.
