Has anyone had good/bad experiences with 21/22 inch crt's that they are willing to share?

I will be using it for Maya, Photoshop, and, compositing etc. I am looking for sharp text also. Normally spend many hours a day in front of the monitor - does the large screen size create increased eye strain (from e-m radiation) in anyone's opinion?
I have gone over all review sources I could find and it seems the best deals are on the viewsonic P220f or P225f. Can anyone here recommend these?
What about Samsung's 1200nf ?
Thanks.

LCDs are better at that size. No eye problems. Smaller footprint. Better value. Sharper image.

yes, they only cost three times as much.... and response times get worse as the size increases.

which is why I raise this topic in the first place. However, If anyone has a particular model lcd to recommend - I'll be happy to hear about it.

Get two 20 inch models and run a duel display. I've used about everything and that's the best setup I've come across. They're not too big so you have to squint at small text - but there's plenty of real-estate take have the main Maya interface on one and the hg, hs, motion editer, etc on the other. Same w/ After FX - comp window on one, timeline on the other. They're cheap too (I use SGI - they're based on Sony Trinitron)

First post here I believe.
Hope this post gets there in time.

From personal experience, I would definitely go with a crt, lcds do have the sharp images, but then they cost an arm and a leg. (especially if you want 17" and up) For that same price you can get a high quality 19" and up (flat screen) monitor. Only draw back is the size.

I would definitely prefer a Viewsonic (since I have one of course :) )
I currently have a Viewsonic 19" Graphics Series G90fb ( this is the same one that I use had in college) I have no problems, and not only that but crt monitor have very good resolutions, about half expensive lcds only go up to 1280 960 (or something like 1280 1024 or 1600 by 1200 blah blah) I got my monitor for about @ 200 US, it's flat, has lots of feautres and memory, and a max res. at about 1920 x 1200 at 75 hz and 1920 1440 at 60hz. I use it for gaming.
If you want a lcd then definitely go for viewsonic.

It all depends on what you want, lcd's are getting cheaper and by next year you will be slapping yourself cause the same one you got now will be 1/2 the price next year.

Hope that helps, sorry for the book.

yes, I was thinking that lcd's still need a little time to mature (and drop in price) - which is why I was wondering if anyone had good experience with crt's in the larger sizes. I tried a 19 inch monitor but at high resolutions things seemed a little small (text bits) and text in general was blurry (mitsubishi dp 930sb). Seems like less and less manufacturers are continuing with their high end crt models though. I was hoping to withstand the lcd pressure for another year or two.

I personally would caution against ViewSonic, as they have quite a rep for malfunctions. I'm not saying they are all bad, but I had one that died within a month of purchase. CRTs are tough and costly to ship out for repairs, so keep that in mind. I personally would go with a Dell CRT. They are fantastic. I think they use trinitron, so that might be why.

but i believe that a lcd screen of 17 inch gets roughly the same amount of viewing space as a 19 inch crt (am i right). also ive gone with the mish mash of monitors one lcd and crt you notice how both look at colours completley diffrent after a while.

I could always go with Sony...
You pay a little more, but you get what you pay for...
Here is one I am planning on buying (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-006-084&depa=1), it is 21"...

And as always it is from NewEgg... Possibly the best On-Line retailer ever...

Dell is having rebates on their LCD's, which expires on monday
you can get a Dell 2005FPW for 600 quid. I've read really good things about Dell LCDs.

details on rebates:
# Dell e1704FPV 17" 1000:1 Contrast LCD = $279 code 25J4093NF0Q528
# Dell E193FP 19-inch Flat Panel Monitor = $399 code XXJK6J3HJFCL2$
# Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 1680x1050 20.1" Wide LCD = $599 code SGS8?T0JFVF1CR

from http://bensbargains.net/

So it costs less then a good 21-22" crt, offers same viewable size, has sharper text, easier for eyes and is smaller. Has good response time as well.

Maybe its time to upgrade! The bigger the better, ALWAYS for CG apps.

It is usefull to know that only LG replaces the screens with one burnt pixel. Personally, I would never go for a monitor from another company, risking to have burnt pixels all around the screen.

It might also be time to upgrade because CRT's are being discontinued :)
NEC/Mitsubishi are discontinuing all CRT products from what I hear.

I still like to stick on my CRT a while since it serves me well on budget I can afford for it. Only one thing bothers me is the table that I am using... it is not very stable (or should I say not safe enough ?) to put my 21 inch monitor in the middle of the table. I am just wondering... (1)what is your workbench (="computer table") look-a-like? (2)any recommendation for table setup for heavy monitor owner?

Unfortunately - it seems as though no one really wants to sell CRT's anymore. Indeed - they are to cheap and too heavy to be worth dealing with for suppliers and retailers who have to supply warranty for these things. Why would you sell something thats several times as heavy and several (often) times cheaper. They are still around but only as not to miss out on the lowest low end market of folks who can't even afford the cheapest crappiest 15 inch LCD - Now marketing directors can't miss out on those......money is money. So often times when going to electronics or computer stores all you see on display is a bunch of CRT's all hooked up on a single pc and going at 60HZ with low resolution and ghosting from the connection. "Oh" (buyers are supposed to say) "indeed - the LCD's on the other side of the display (each on its own pc of course) look so much better by comparison.......They must be worth twice as much......."

Sorry, people, it just made me angry to see high end crt's flickering away at 60hz with ghosting and low res. But I guess we can't tell people how to run their business and wether or not to respect the client enough to let them make their own decision.

Not to say LCD's arebad - Its just that the main emerging conclusion is: why get one now when they should be getting cheaper and faster and better at color reproduction in the near future.

Anyway, thanks for the info on Mitsubishi - where did you hear it anyway?

By the way - the only Dell CRTs I could find are the M992 model (shadow mask) and p1230 (somekindatron)

Anyone seen a IBM c220p??

Thanks.
