View Full Version : Detail
Hi All .
One day I was waching makeing of Starwars about models they used for space battles and stuff . I'm trying to see if the realizm of ship is depended on details so I made this ship .
I was working on this project 10 ours and it's not finished . I mean it's just for test this idea .
If you can say somethink about it .... thanks...

nice model! maps looks well applied, but look a little too sharp maybe. cool concept though how about some lights on the hull somewhere?

I didn't use textures (jus simple 3d leather texture) I just want to show object modeling . No bump - pure objects ...

just out of curiosity, whats the poly count?

my computer is afraid of that poly count, but cool model!:D

This was lesson of patience. I reflect whether worth effect is of such work . Is substance of building so complicated objects to obtain similar effects as at real models. You saw how look models from Star Wars.
Thanks for replies ....

Finally a fellow Maya user. My computer would have crashed and burned by now.
I can console you Whirlwind this not my computer. Computer is of a firm. I do not possess of own computer at present . And is not some monster. 2XPIII 500 and 1MB memories and elsa glory 2. All the time too weak. Especially about film - productions

Whaa. it looks like a real model. :) great but i don't think my comp would like that one. ;)

Nice to see another modeller with ambitions of making details...Allthough i dont like the structure of your details. They look too chaotic. In some places, it looks like you simply extruded faces from a subdivision-surface. Personally, i think square-shaped greebles are very booring. I like L-shapes and S-shapes better. I try to keep all corners in my greebles 90° too, it makes them look more machine-made. I like when the individual details has very mechanical feel, but the bigger areas filled with greebles has a chaotic and organic feel...It creates a nice conflict. :)
Also, i really don't like the alignment of the two big things in the front/left. they should be aligned to the panels, not the world's coordinate system..
...And it seems like you've made some useless details. The small stuff that you show in the end of the arrow seams too small, since they can't be seen in the overall rendering of the ship. Never do details that you won't see...There are similar problems in the area showed by the wireframe.
Thank you for edifying critique. If I can discuss this , quickly I peeped on Your web page . Apparently we have different notion on theme of details. You are right that I used straight extrude polygons at these least parts. I must however say that in chance when necessary is large close relations of object to show his magnitude Your objects are not suitable to this. Very thank you too your opinions and I greet Staffan Norling

Most of the stuff on my site is from the time when i was searching from my own style. Most of the details are based on starwars-ships. This (http://squapper.hypermart.net/img/spin20.jpg)andthis (http://squapper.hypermart.net/img/spin21.jpg) picture shows a newer ship by be. Please note that the texture is not finished.
However, earlier i though my "greebles" as extruded from the surface of the ship. In my new ship, i don't "add greebles to a surface", i rather "fill a volume with greebles". You know what i mean?
On the top of the ship, there are still lots of extruded stuff, becouse it's a surface and not a volume.
But on the other hand, in the "trenches" on the side of the ship, there are twisted froms, pipes and wicked stuff hanging down from the cieling, sticking up from the floor and out from the wall.
It seams like all your greebles are "extruded" (talking in terms of design, not in terms of modelling). Maybe you should try a way of applying your unique greeble-style to volumes?
Please do not take my replies as defence becuse I think You work is very good . I think I'll try to work with Your's ideas . I can say also that I used simple extrude only in the smallest parts .
Thanks for discusion....

Dude I think you should keep on trucking, or in this case modeling, while it might not be the most efficient model, it sure looks damn cool. It is a test in breaking the polygon count :)
I also like the design direction it takes. I dont' know what this thing does, but it's impressive looking.
Just keep on doing it.

Holy crap man. I can max out a computer with the best of them, but I've never tried something this insane. True that the beauty is in the details, but there also comes a point when it gets into overkill. In our field its not always about the beauty of the model, but the efficiency. About half of what you have is enough to impress someone based on your modelling skills. The ship design is nice, though. Star wars isn't the be all, end all of space ship design. In fact, I think some of the newer stuff that ILM has cranked out has been some of the worst I've ever seen. Don't limit your influences.

great model
To Ephesus ! I allready rendered animation with this ship . Simple flying thru the space . I can do a lot with this because I have render farm :) . But it was just the test .. Every one are right that is insane but I allready know that for movie production this is not enoug . Imagine 2K with this ship . I would be totaly insane if I wanted to texture this stuff .....
And don't say thah U my friends kan't do this kind of think .
It's NOT A PROBLEM OF SKILL BUT PEATIANCE ..... in this case ..
Thank's U ALL !!!!

amazing detail work - I think exercises like this are super useful, it gives you perspective on detail - necessary and unnecessary. After doing something so completely overloaded with geometry, the next ship you build will have "wiser" detailing - meaning, you will have learned where it is best spent and most economical.
In short - MODEL HARD, you madman!!!! :D
ps. although I don't use it anymore(i use LW7) - the electric image camera (2.9) would probably render this without even blinking. But thats another thread.....
