View Full Version : Dell Laptop: Precision M60 or Inspirion 9200?
Freij 12-02-2004, 06:16 PM Hi!
I'm just about to buy a new laptop and I've set my mind on the dell inspirion 9200 or the precision m60.
Anyone got any experience with the 9200 since it's a fairly new one? I know the m60 is a powerful one but it has been around for a while.
The main differences are these:
9200:
17" screen
ATI Radeon 9700 128MB
A few weeks old...
M60:
15.4" screen
NVidiaQuadro FX Go 1000 128MB
A year old or even more but the flagship of Dell...
So, what's the best choice?
Thanks,
/Anders

Inspiron 8600 is the best choice for the money.
I would not get a 17" laptop if you plan on using it outside and have to carry it.
there are more than a few threads which discuss this very same topic , search for it.

I can't answer your question since I don't own a dell laptop. But I do have a 17" laptop (HP ZD7230us) and I take it everywhere I go. I purchased a neoprene laptop sleeve for it, which has a pocket behind the inside lid that has enough room and space for my tablet.

i agree with sheepfactory bout the inspiron being the best for memory.
I've got the laptop..the one with the widescreen etc. I'm guessing you'll be using it for 3d etc? If so, well in my case at least, this baby has served me well for all my 3d needs. running max6 with photoshop CS with after effects etc without any hassle so far. though i did reinstall the whole thing to get rid of Dell's preloaded stuff. bout the screen size being 17 inch and all, ive not encountered any problems in bringing it anywhere i go. well thats just my two cents worth

Get both! Ok, j/k.
I have an M60 for personal use and a coworker of mine has the 9200, and I must say that they both have their strengths. One thing about the 9200 is that for the size -- it's VERY light. I don't know the exact specs, but from handling both, I'd say that the 9200 might actually be lighter than the M60.
It really boils down to what video card you prefer, as far as I can tell. The ATI 9700 will be better for DirectX games, but the Quadro is better for OpenGL.

Got an M60 here and couldn't be happier. It handles Maya just fine and even has decent battery life for a Dell. The screen is crazy sharp as well.

thanks for the replies. it seems like both got their advantages.
I'm gonna use it mainly to do 3d work on it, so I guess the quadro card is a better choice for that. but the 17" screen on the 9200 is really nice to do 3d on as well I supose, if the Radeon card can perform with the 1920x1200 resulotion! and not crash maya..
And the 9200 is newer.
By the way..
I heard that the M70 will be released the 17th or 19th of Februari 2005 (in Sweden/Denmark etc. that is), with 256 Mb graphic card but still with a 15.4" screen! I don't have all the specs yet but I think I'll get them by next week.
The thing for me is that I need to buy it before the end of this year...
Enoying of course but it will probably always be another better one out in the close future so it's not much to do about it...
It's gonna be nice anyway with a new computer!

Sheep, I've been searching for what you're talking about with no luck. I've tried searching for every iteration of the following:
17*
out*
17* AND out*
outside
17* AND outside
outdoor*
17* AND outdoor*
Would you mind clarifying exactly what to search for to find the threads you're talking about please? Thanks much!

Hi Freij,
Can you elaborate more about what your heard of the M70? 15.4" screen and not 17" seems odd to me, I heard rumors of a 17" workstation. Also february seems very late, especially since the new quadro Go is already being preanounced for some models. Check what I posted a few days ago:

I think the release date in Februari is because of the new ddr2 ram that the m70 will have.
