It's weird how sites have different reports of this. IGN said there was no interest in Japan, which is untrue based on the photos. It's a matter of shotty reporting by different sites.
It's not really a "fight" since PSP isn't even out yet. DS has a good headstart.

How is DS doing in the states?

I saw quite a lot of people playing with it this last week. I tested one out at ebgames and i'll definitely be picking one up today also.

great gaming system.

I played a demo of a DS recently and was totally stunned. I actually played an FPS shooter on a console (portable, no less) and was actually able to accurately aim my gun! I want Golendeye for this thing!

I played a Demo DS and I too was pleasently surprised.
It still fit in my jeans pocket too. Not the best fit like the SP but still, not bad. My hoodies are perfect for it though, and its winter!
(It was funny when I was trying the Demo DS, the first thing I did was put it into my hoodie, and Jeans pocket. Took the clerk by surprise for a second)
Its on my christmas list!!

I played a demo of a DS recently and was totally stunned. I actually played an FPS shooter on a console (portable, no less) and was actually able to accurately aim my gun! I want Golendeye for this thing! ME TOO! I was impressed with the DS from the go, but when I had a chance to play the demo...WOW! Playing Metriod Prime (FPA/FPS) with the stylist was absolutely amazing. It was like playing with a mouse. Very very cool.

Neil, I thought IGN reported a very large interest in Japan for the DS.
(Side note Neil, I'm playing through MGS:TTS on the GC...AMAZING! I'm an MGS fan now. Once I finish, I'm moving to the MGS:2 for the PS2. I've played about half way through MGS:2. But MGS:TTS hooked me in.)

Nintendo said they have sold 500 thousands ds in the usa in its first week. And the same has been said about the japanese launch. They are planning to sell up to 5 million ds for march. Impressive numbers.

I personaly am ticked off that the game magazines over here are totaly putting the DS down for its size, when folded up its only slightly bigger then a PSP. Who cares how big the system is when your playing it if it folds up to roughly around the same size. That and with the folding system you don't have to worry about scratching up the screen when you stick it in your jean's pocket, That and the PSP is going to be a frigin huge investment. It runs off Mini DVD's and no one is saying how the system might have skipping problems, Ask anyone who went to Tokyo Game show or E3 and you'll hear that at both of them they where bolted down to a display stand. That and its memory cards are pretty much Digital camera mem cards, wich means for a decent card you're going to be shelling out 50 bucks for something that can only hold 32 megs. Granted you probably don't need that much, but its still going to be pricy.I know I'm going to eventualy get both systems. I just love the DS and my good friend is actualy a Lead level guy on one of the PSP launch titles. So I got to show my support there. But personaly I'm going to wait till E3 where Nintendo MIGHT drop the price of the DS down to compete with the PSP releaseing. (When companys compete, you win.)

I had no intention of buying either portable at their price points, but DAMN! That DS IS the coolest thing I have ever seen. I may sell my underused Gamecube to get one! The Metroid demo was frickin amazing. That and wireless LAN built in... I drool at the possibilities of DS becoming a FPS fans dream portable. The screen is really bright and clear too!

IMO Sony is in trouble when it comes to PSP, especially with their sad line up of games. (MGS Yugi-Oh...geesh. and as an Armored Core fan, I have to say FROM has sunk about as far as they can with the PSP AC game.) Then again the Hype machine that killed Dreamcast will probably come into play again. -_-

(And no I'm not anti Sony... I'm on my 2nd Ps2 afterall... OK I am anti sony's Hardware quality. :D )

excellent excellent stuff guys. Good to hear. The ds was getting stick from go for no reason.

The psp sucks. Im going to be scared anytime i put the psp in the same pocket as my keys (unless i spend even more money on a case, which will again increase the size of it). Its running on optical discs, which have moving parts, which means IT WILL SKIP.

the thing will look tatty after people have had it for a month. and im sure ull be hearing all sorts of things jiggling about inside.

Good on you Nintendo. You guys have been the portable console leaders for years. I dont think ill let myself get sucked in by this SONY malarchy thank you very much. Ill leave my clie to all the movie playing functions, mp3s etc....

Seems to me like Metroid has been the poster child for all the demo videos and screen shots, so I'm guessing that's your best bet.

Watch out on that metroid though. The DEMO comes with the system, but the real game is'nt comming out till around march or april of next year.

Personaly I can't wait to play the new Mister Driller. For those who enjoy fast paced puzzle / survival games, that one is one of the best around. The idea is that you have to keep drilling down, but as you drill, blocks on top of you will begin to fall down, so you need to get through the level without being crushed to death by the blocks. It was one of the most super addicting games on the GBA and I don't see how the DS one can let you down concidering you can now see ALOT more of the blocks that are falling on top of you.

The coolest thing that closed the deal in running all over town trying to find the units was the Wireless option.

I picked up Mario 64 DS with 2 DS's. Come Xmass me, and the boy will be playing head to head from one game card.<img>

I haven't played a Nintendo Product since waaaay..waaaay back, but have always enjoyed the colorful scenery and ingenuity in some of the games, when visiting E3.
I do think that the DS..like all Nintendo products fit a younger audience better.
The PSP will probably be marketed for preteens and up.

oh and it can play GBA games t00, which i thougth was also a nice option, since the timeline of those video games passed us by, and now maybe we can play stuff we missed.

;)
