"Self Portraits "
By
GORO

Welcome to the cgtalk sketch group.

We will try to post one of these topics once a day for your enjoyment.

These are the rules:
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing, unless is it an integral part of the challenge.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.

Good luck

-Roberto

Wasn't there already a Daily Sketch about self-portraits? Or do I confuse it with the CGtalk-portrait-thing?

Hi all together!
I followed the Daily Sketch forum for weeks and Love it. You all are greate; masterpieces every day. I thought i would participate, but my drawings (pen&paper) are mostly very empty cause it takes me to long to fill it completly. But i think i will post today, and if possible for yesterday.

I hope its okay for you when my drawings look like they were made in two minutes.

So ill go and scan them ;)

Sorry, but how to upload my picture  The faq says that only Veterans can do so. I saw members with less than 30 posts posting their pictures. I dont want to spam this thread but... Could someone give me an advice? thanks

So is this another avatar-related sketch, or our actual self-portraits?

robinayles
12-02-2004, 06:51 PM
welcome on board me|ee....any sketch is welcome, draw 'em digitally or draw on paper and scan them in, whatever works for you.

I think its up to you as to whether or not you want it to be your Avatar or yourself.

i think this time you're looking for real portraits, yeh? not the avatar ones we did before?

50mins PS - i tried to use one brush the whole time and tried to kinda make it piece together, i'm pleased with the result, but i need to practice more at this to get it down - fridayeye's work inspired this technique...any chance you might make us a tutorial???

I thought I could give a quick try at this one... 40min, OpenCanvas 1.1

[edit: 30 min more work, this time using references... here (http://gaitasfritas.250free.com/sketches/self.jpg) is the previous version]

This guy looks a bit scary, almost like a boxer... I'm not completely happy with it...
I didn't use ref (just my memory, I see this guy everyday in every mirror), but I've managed to find a photo in a similar pose, so you can judge for yourselves:

http://gaitasfritas.250free.com/sketches/micareto2.JPG (I don't usually have a red nose, I swear it was just effect of the sun :D )

here (http://gaitasfritas.250free.com/sketches/Self.zip) is the .wpe, if anyone is interested

good ones today, I specially like augustus'...15min (!?)
It can be interesting to see some faces instead of just avatars... keep posting guys!:)

This is from back in the days when I was a famous astronaut.
Here's the pic (http://www.bolman.nl/cgtalk/0180b.jpg) my lovely girlfriend took as a reference.
And for everyone still reading after that pic, here's the event file (http://www.bolman.nl/cgtalk/0180.zip).

Goro: Good topic, and a great sketch too. You're quite unstoppable.
Jiasar: That's a great pic. Though not very recognizable, I like the mood.
Edit: Garma: Thats good, but you need some white highlight area's to bring out the skin more. And also add some red tones to the sides of your face. And the glasses need some lighter colors in them instead of being all black. They look like black holes right now.

Overall there are some nice sketches. It's good to see the people behind the sketches.

Edit, Update, thanks for all the pointers and the brusches goro!
I borrowed a copy of CS to try it out, exept from the fact that I had to supress the urge to play a FPS instead of drawing everytime i see the name, I love it! So much more fun than 5.5 (On the laptop) and 6.0 I had before. Now I know what I want for christmas :)

I borrowed your framing Jiasaer, hope you dont mind.

I did these two throughout the day... all in all, it was probably about 3 hrs of work, which is much longer than it should have been. I couldn't decide which one to post (and essentially they're the same), and I figured no one would mind if I posted two at the same time.

http://img53.exs.cx/img53/2668/49-self_portrait.jpg
I decided to go with really bright colours because on the first page all the guys were posting dark, brooding portraits (which I liked a lot), which was what I initially wanted to do, but I didn't want to do what everyone else was doing. So effeminate portraits all the way!

Sir Patroclo, congratulations for your new job!

Robinayles, you are making really good progress... it's amazing the likeliness in your pic, and also in your grandson's one (Best Friends)...good work, Catherine Zeta Jones! :)

sagi_13, no offense but... I never thought you were a girl! (and a pretty one, I would say) damn avatars, hehehe...

captainchapo- I like it, using one brush here seems to work, for some reason it looks like if it is paint like oils or something.

Goro- As always great work.. You look a lot more serious and dark in your potrait than in the picture. The lightning is great.. as always great work.

Xibala- Nince sketch, I like that you made it one color and I like that choice of color, what is it ? also great light.

augustus-that is dam good for 15 min. I wish I could sketch that fast.

Jarhead- hehehe I like that your little devil is a chubby one :)

elmasfeo - Lol yes your guy does look intimdating... and yes it is hard to tell that I am a girl by my avatar... and the nick sagi does not help much. Thank you for your comments, I do feel I have improved from my earlier sketches. All the great work here just inspired me to keep practing and get better.

Garma- it does not suck. I like it you look suave, if that make any sense at all.. perhaps the glasses are too big they are just two big black slabs, if you gave them more shape I think it would look better.

Supervlieg- Too infinity and beyond... sorry I had to. great sketch as always you produce fantastic work.

jiasaer - I wish I was doing that right now, hmm sleep...
Lord Blue - I like the pose.

Alice - Great similarity to the picture, great.. I love your red highlights.. I have some purple ones.. but they keep fading out.. so my hair ends up looking multicolored.

Jeffsimpson- The boring adventures of Jeffsimpson? Is that a title of something else like animation or something?

robinayles - But you do look like Catherine Zeta Jones. Your sketch is very close to your picture, well done.. you know by looking at your avatar I always pictured a little kid.

Sir Patroclo - Great sketch! I just noticed that your little avatar guy has the same little scar on the forehead, so I take his the caricature version of you right? Muy vacan. (congrats on being a professional graphic desinger! :)

Octothreat - very close to the original picture.. I like how you did the eyes and shadows.
Dimitih - No you dont look fat
GOT! - I didnt notice the tongue sticking out till I was looking at it in more detail and it scared me
Daroita - I like the floating head in the middle of the sky

FridayEve - great job.. but whats with the shoe?
thesuit- Nice lighting, are you looking into a computer screen by any chance?
The Gunslinger- I like ur black and white one. it just puts attention to the lines which are very clean. and well done.
Erikoinen- :) I like that expression on your face as you are jamming away in your guitar.

Erilaz: Thanks man!
Jiasaer: Nice comeback. Nice skintones.
Lord Blue: Good one, I think a little more variation in the greytones would make it even more interesting.
Alice: Good Job! The face is really well done. I'm not sure about the light on the right shoulder, its a bit distracting.
Pixelplay: Nice style. You got that burt reynold look going on man. In his younger years offcourse.
JeffSimpson: Good caricature. Hard to see if it looks like you without a ref.
RobinAyles: I think we shall all call you catherina from now on :). Good sketch, maybe a little more shading in the face would give it more depth.
Kelli: Nice soft colors, it needs a bit more variation in the skin colors to bring it out some depth.
Sir Patroclo: Hey, you're alive! Congrats on making it man! Good sketch as well. Really shows how much you look like your avatar.
Octothreat: Good sketch, I like the loose style. Maybe you should cut it off the same way the photo it cut off. It looks like you have a flat head right now.
Hellshad: Good start. Why dont you give it another shot in photoshop.
Dimitih: Nice, it doesnt make you look fat, but maybe a little shadow under your skin would define the neck better.
GOT!: Like two drops of water man :), I just miss the revolving eyes in the real pic.
Ransom: Good start, but it looks a bit unfinished coloring wise.
Daroita: The link doesnt work, but the small pic looks pretty okay.
Captain Chapo: This one reads a lot better.
Gemcap: Thanks, Nice caricature. Hard to judge the likeness without ref.
FridayEve: Great style, I like that paintery look to your images. You have great choice of colors.
Thesuit: NIce one, but a little too blurry imo.
The gunslinger: Nice style. Very andy warhol
Sagi_13: Thanks, and good one! With the mouse?! Holy crap, respect!
Erikoinen: Nice one, needs a little more detailing, but overall pretty good.
Gordonm: Good likeness, but the pink needs a bit more variation.
Edit: Logick: Nice one, though your head seems a bit longer in real life.

Good topic guys, rock on!

Sagi yes I tried to paint my dark side hehehe. Well wanted to create different lighting.
since you have wacom you're improoving fast. The next step is try not to get too blurry
with your brushstrokes and set your opacity to pen pressure. Then you can Mix colors
directly on the canvas a lot better. Here I've made you 3 brushes I use very often.
They're very simple but effective. Try it out

put the file in adobe/photoshop/presets/brushes
Then you can easily import them in the brushes menu

Sup nice wpe you got there! Great work!

Gordonm you look like an actor hehehe. I can imagin you sitting in a dark corner of a bar in a black suit with a cigar as a gangster boss hehehe.

Regarding brusches, I gave the oposite problem of that, everything I do tends to be too polished in the sence that it would be nice with some brushstrokes and a more "painterly" feeling.
I use a rather old version of photoshop tho, dont even know what angle jitter is :p

So many great contributions on this one, gonna take the time and look through the whole thread later.
Cheers!

your welcome queensoul!

Ok Alice!

These are some custombrushes I made lately maybe you could use those to
get the paiterly look you want to achieve. But you also can get the look with the standart round brush I posted earlier if you use different pressure power and mix the colors using the alt key. It works pretty well. But be carefull not to get too soft with the strokes.
I often paint with a lot of pressure to get rid of the blurry look. I use the opacity jitter
mostly to mix colors. If you use the soft edged brush you can do nice volumetric light
in making the brush huge and just paint a stroke with less pressure. It works pretty well.

Used some angle jitter for my brushes too. Angle jitter means that a rotation jitter of the
brush is added. Doesn't work with a round brush though...cause it's round. But if you
for example use a rectangular brush with angle jitter you will see that the rectangle
rotates randomly.

Wich version do you use. Hope the brushes work!

Queensoul: Thats a good start. You need to vary the colors more to give the skin a less flat look. If you look at the highlights in the picture, you'll see theyre yellow and on top of that white. The forehead and tip of the nose have these the most. If you try to bring that color variation in the sketch itll be closer to the pic.
Also the sides of your face in the picture seem to be of a purple hue. Try to give the edges of your face, and the contours a bit of that color.
And overall I think your head in the sketch should be longer. Good luck!

Okay, quick post 'cause I'm in a rush heading to the car shop to get my #!%& car antenna replaced because I forgot to lower it going into a car wash the other day. AARRGH!

This thread is simply amazing. Stellar work everyone! What a bunch of handsome men and beautiful women we turn out to be, huh? WOW! And to think the cliche image of computer geeks is someone that looks like Dilbert! HA!

Goro - thank you so much for sharing your brushes, I can't wait to paint with them!

Thanks for all the compliments folks! <blushes> Supervlieg, I was going to shade it more, but then I decided I really liked how it looked and sometimes I tend to overwork my stuff...so I just stopped before I wrecked it! :) ...and Sagi - you picture me as a kid because you see the inner me! :D

Queensoul - you are such a beautiful African Queen! REally nice, but you did draw your face wider and shorter than it is in real life. I'd like to add to Supervlieg's comments by saying that you need more of a darker line showing the edges of your nose and chin/jawline. Look again at your ref pic and see how there is a definate line of shadow there.

gordonm - really good likeness, but you need some white in your eyes unless you have pink eye! :p

too many others to comment right now - super good work everyone!

Firstly, your self-portrait is pretty good, but I'd suggest adding a bit to the background or cropping it a bit more on the top... too much white space ;)

Queensoul, its ALOT better, Your so beautiful in the photo and it kinda looks like you are drawing not what you see in the photo but what picture you have in your mind of it.
This is a hard one to explain, but if you think "eye" and then draw it, one would prolly have an image of an eye in their heads. Kinda like the egyptian symbol for eye, and then draw that.
When I draw lips I always tend to pick reddish or pink when I realy should pick a skintone. Simply cause thats the image I have in my mind on lips.

Hope that helps somehow :D

Crazy concepts your stuff rocks!

queensoul that looks a lot better! And I see that you pick the colors by yourself and not directly from the ref! That's a really important thing. To see the colors not to pick that's great!
I've got a suggestion for the hair You should use a dark color (not black) and use a hard edged brush. Make it a bit bigger and then just block in the hairsilouette first. Without caring about the curls. Just paint until you can't see the background through your hair. Then you can start to add the highlights and curls. And remember not to get too detailed too fast. Just work from low to high detail. hope this helps!

cheers! Goro

Firstly, your self-portrait is pretty good, but I'd suggest adding a bit to the background or cropping it a bit more on the top... too much white space ;)
I almost cropped it, but a voice in my head said, "Try to keep your face near the center of the picture." I agree that the pic could do with some background, but I got lazy and the voice seemed satisfied so I just posted it. Thanks for the crit.

Also... your sister is very pretty :O My wife read this and asked, "What about meee?" :D

Queensoul -- I really like your shading along your hairline and cheekbone. Nice color selection! One crit I'd offer is that your ref picture has a straight, vertical shadow that runs the length of your nose, and a highlight at the tip. As you practice, you might try doing a few drawings in grayscale so you're only focussing on light and shadow. Color has its own set of problems, and I'm only just realizing how little I know about it. Nice work, though.

This has been such a great thread. It feels like a Daily Sketch Holiday Party and I'm finally getting to see you all for the first time.

robinayles
12-04-2004, 05:47 PM
Queensoul - yes, that is a lot better...beautiful! I would only suggest that you could still deepen the shadows...don't be afraid of the shadows, they are your friend! :) Especially alongside your nose and chin...its almost like drawing a very dark line..then just slightly
blend it in. But it def. looks more like your ref. pic now. Really good work!

Vitriolic - really nice sketch...but I think I like you better smiling like in "My imaginary friend" because that was yourself you drew in that one too, right?

Its fun to go back to the last time this topic was posted. Thanks for the link, tuzz. I love ilikesoup's sketch of himself at work, good one! And I thought that 1) Sir P's scar was recent, but looks like he had it back in June as well -and- 2) Kirt would be more of a chubby, little round-faced guy like his Avatar! .You are sooo right - I'm really glad I didn't include them...but I do have a step-sister that's single. Maybe I should post her pic? :)

Ok, I know this isn't fair because you have no way of really knowing...Kelli is actually my step-daughter and she looks nothing like me. She does have a small resemblance to her biological mom - but Kelli is really beautiful, and thankfully did not get my genetics. I do, however, have to claim responsibility for her warped sense of humor and smartass attitude! :buttrock:

Wow. Perhaps I should take my "Lenin-esque" style painting and put "OWNED" really big across the bottom :p

There are certain reasons why I don't comment on the looks of a certain person's wife :) Not generally because of how good they do or do not look, but more so because no matter how you answer it, sometimes you just... don't get it right and end up offending someone;) I almost didn't say anything at all, but I figured that saying something about your sister was fair game so long as I didn't cross any lines. Sorry... guess neither of us said anything about that. Robin is my step-mom, but she raised me and my brother with my dad. And anything smartass that I say you can directly link it to her!:bounce:

Hi:
how are you all doing? seems like Roberto had the best idea to do a self-portrait revival, it's fun to know more about the real people behind the avatars.

Robin, I've had the forehead scar since at least 5 years now, the one on the cheek is the most recent, two years I guess. All the Patroclos so far are marked too... I have the feeling that we gentlemen on the sketch group will begin pasting our heads on top of that of your daughter's husband and using that photo as a wallpaper.:D

Ilikesoup, (what soup do you like?), I don't have a new position, I don't even have a formal job yet, just finished college, so now I have a degree on graphic design. Probably what you remember were comments about finishing my thesis (wich ended up as a long essay).

FridayEve,
:(
I can't view your web page at all. I haven't been able to view your sketches for more than a week. Any ideas? I was able to see them before... :(

This is greatly upsetting to me :(

Edit: just noticed that it didn't say "FridayEve" up there

Ilikesoup, (what soup do you like?)
Well, I tried an excellent Portuguese soup last night at a church fundraiser. Tomato, onion, linguica. . . :)
Anyway, I was told as a boy that being an artist is a difficult way to support yourself and that you'd better like soup (or Ramen noodles or any other inexpensive food). So to me Ilikesoup = I'm cool with being an artist, although I've got a 9 to 5 job that pays the bills and I draw at night and on weekends as time allows. Anyway, great to see you back and congratulations.

FridayEve -- On MTV Cribs, first you show the shoes (where do you put them all?) and then you show your director's cut DVD of Scarface. It's the rules. :D

Robin & Kelli -- Sorry for the case of mistooken identity. Um, they say that when you live with a person long enough you start to look like them. . . nevermind.

Ilikesoup - its ok, no prob. and very easy to understand. Kelli and I are close and often leave out the "step" when referring to each other. Then later when people find out, they are very confused. But she is a fair skinned redhead and I'm dark haired and olive skinned. Her brother is also a fair redhead, their dad is dark haired and med skinned. We used to get really funny looks when the kids were little...here these 2 dark haired people were with 2 lilly-white redheads! HA! Very fun! I love it!

Sir P - thanks for the scar updates. I gotta say (and it goes back to a remark made by Alice) makes one start to wonder just how many knife fights you might have been in!? :p As for using Kelli's pic with your faces pasted over the hubby...well, I guess that is between you and your computer because we would never know. Its funny how she thinks that is a bad picture of her....I told you she was gorgeous! Maybe I'll paste (or sketch) another photo of her sometime...one that she thinks is a good pic.

Gordonm: Good likeness, but the pink needs a bit more variation.
Good topic guys, rock on!Your absolutely right about the colour. The image is weak - needs much more edge.

I really wanted to be able to do something like that for that thread, but guess what? :( Dad's computer just got fried up (yes.. smoke was there too)... and the internet network got reseted too so everything's messed up.

:( I don't think you will be able to c me for a while... but... hey I'll post something in here as soon as I can. :)

Oh btw.. I'm at the school's compupter if you're wondering how I'm online. :P

Great portraits everyone! :D

FridayEve, you're talented! I'm just curious about which brushes you used for that? I used to use oil... but then now I just switched to oil pastels.. way nicer and faster in my opinion. *shrugs* Keep it up! :D

Umm.. It looks good, but you shouldn't make your own thread for your sketches. At least that's how I see it. You should post to the threads that RobertoOrtiz has started and has the topic of what you've been sketching on.

Great sketch vindow!
You have to post more often.

Wow it has been awhile since i've visited...a terribly long while. Been too busy and distracted to participate unfortunately. Sure miss it!
I was browsing through some of the compiled Sketch of the Week threads and the quality has definitely gone way up. Don't know if what i do can even be classified as a sketch compared to most of what's posted in hereabouts nowadays! Anyway, I came across this one and thought since I had a quick one done for my website a month or so back, I'd post it here. Yes I know it's really late and all. And the 'winner' for this topic is rightfully deserved. Awesome work as usual. In fact FridayEve should be banned from participating! He keeps beating everybody all the time! J/k :) <edit: Seems Goro and Vitriolic are right up there as well just to name a few others. No offence to them. Really goes to show how out of touch I am!>

http://almahir.com/cpg132/albums/draw/2004_pencil_mahir_self_sketch.jpg

Approximately 10 min pencil sketch. Used a mirror for basic reference.

I'll try to visit more often. Maybe even participate again soon. Hopefully...

Some really great late additions! WOW, salamander, I didn't picture you like that at all. Not sure what I thought you looked like, but didn't realize you're handsome enough to be an actor. You're the actor they hire to play the part of an artist, right?

Nice one too there, Mahir...welcome back. Hope to see you more around here.
