View Full Version : Question regarding Discreet's 'Illustrative' type renders
lildragon 08-28-2002, 03:49 PM Hi guys,
We recently got our Max 5 upgrade in and I'm itching to try out some of the new features... I skimming through the online help file and I noticed that Discreet uses some very illustrative type images to demonstrate the features and so fourth... I saw this in 4.2 but never really took note until now...
My question is now, how would one go about achieving this style render? especially with the bones showing.
I'm currently writing some tutorials and this would be a very informative way to show my points...
any help is appreciated
salud!

hmmm close? Custom falloff map from Taoizm, or maybe ink & paint should be used?

Hazarding a guess, but they could well have been done in Max using the wonderful Cartoon Reyes plug in ( a plug in not under threat from the *cough* new Ink and Paint material:D), though they could also have been done I think by taking the meshes into Illustrator. :)

Look at

To see how the illustrative-octopus was made

Cool. I had wondered this since Max4, too. It's a very good style --nice to look at and warm-looking --much more inviting than usual 3d instructional renderings. And all in all, the Max manuals and online help are 'bout the best I've seen -- very well thought out and executed.

Indeed, here's Rob's explanation
Those images are usually created starting from a model (like the guy or the octopus), making a Reference clone, adding a Push modifier to the clone (with a small push value, like 0.01) and then assigning a semi-transparent material to the original object, and a wire material to the clone.
For the bones, make sure you make them renderable (in the object properties dialog), then do the same as above on the whole bone chain. If you freeze the clones you should still be able to work on the model and bones, and the clones will update automatically.
If I'm not wrong, the guy model is in the max 5 sample files, and it went out still with the clones. You can take a look. The octopus is there as well.

heres how i do this:
set the mesh to ghost [or x-ray, i forget what they cal lit][the x-ray view wher eu can see throught htte model]
set the ghost color to whatever youd like it to be in preferences
set the bone colors individually
then do a screen cap
looiking at that image im pretty sure thats what they did
