View Full Version : Frazetta-style Warrior Woman
MrGrinch 12-02-2004, 12:54 AM This is a project I started last night that I'm hoping to complete in the next week for a presentation. This warrior woman is done in the style of the women in Frank Frazetta's paintings, quite volumptuous and muscley. I want to deck her out in skimpy viking-style armour and clothes. Any crits and coments about the muscle structure and basic design would be very helpful.

her hips are way too big...they arent proportional to the rest of the body
this is looking good so far though

Good job so far... I think she would fit into a Frazetta painting well. He does paint the hips large, but that's his style. So, I have no crits as of yet.
Nice model. I think that the inside og the thighs should be more rounded/defined, and that the breasts should be pointing more outward...

Hey.
Agreed with Yoff, from top view there should be an approximatively 90° angle between the lines drawn from the nipples to the spine.
Maybe the thighs seem a little bit too big, but hey, that's Frazetta's Style ! I'm sure it'll fit right when rigged and clothed.
Kkep it up !

Thanks everyone for your comments.
Yoff and Waugh; yeah, I see what you mean, the breasts weren't quite right, I've changed them now. I had such a hard time stopping them looking like bad silicon implants.
Still having a little trouble defining the muscles on the thighs and the knees, but I've moved on to her clothes so I dont start obsessing. I've done her hands, but I'll post another update when I've got a bit more to show and the poor girl has some clothes.

I've roughed out the general clothing idea, I just wanted to get some feedback before I start on the details. Clothing isnt something I've tried before, so this part may take a while. I have a tight deadline for this so if it doesnt look like I'm getting anywhere with the clothes I'll just start on the body texture. She's going to have long black hair, but I have to get to grips with poly modelling it yet.
Again, all crits and comments welcome.

Remember Frank always does very detailed backs
you need to fix hers:)

You're right mora, I've been collecting pictures of his and there are a few which are obvious studies of the back muscles. I've tried to put a bit more shape into hers.
A quick flyaround of what I hope is the final version of the body. I'm cutting it close for time so I may simply texture her and rig her into an interesting position. I've removed the hair in the back views so you can get a look at her back.
Any observations of things I could fix would be really helpfull, I'll start unwrapping tomorrow morning.
http://home.iprimus.com.au/grahamcrosby/3D/warrior_turnaround.jpg
Hi Cool!
I think you can cheat the back muscles by adding good texture map.Or maybe some displacement as well.
I think you have a pretty good FF style model:)
Her back Back view (top of head til bottom of feet) is'nt as interesting as her front imo
Here Knee area (and sides of knee too sharp) need fixing
And umm here butt crack might need to be closer together.
Because FF makes great BUTTs but you cant see the butt h@le
you might wanna fix her face as well,FF's girls have round pound stucture, chubbier cheeks, small nose, round forehead etc..etc
However if you're out of time, its still a good effort

Thanks mora, I'm not planning to show much from the back view, so I think I'll stop modelling and use your idea with the textures :).
Ah, I was hoping no one else noticed her odd knees. This is why I need other people's opinions, otherwise I convince myself it's just me being fussy. Yeah, I know what you mean about her face, I debated what kind of structure I should give her, I think round would work better. More in style.
I've rendered out a quick front shot (as the back is still boring) with her all rigged up in the pose I was going to use. I'm a little behind schedule so I havent started textures yet.

You're a mean one, MrGrinch; and you make a mean-looking woman-warrior!
I think you captured the look of a Frazetta woman well. (Love to see a wire.)
I think it would be fantastic if you also create a nice Frazetta-like environment to put her into. Good job!
Whoah! (heart thumpin)
really good
-TO HELL WITH TYRA BANKS AND VERSACE..etc..etc !:scream:
She looks great without her armor
But you might wanna fix her arm
Her bicep has a weird surface
IF you have the time:)
But as always
Beautiful! Does remind me of Frazetta.

Thanks everyone for your great comments :) I'm glad I was able to capture Frazetta's style.
mora: Glad you think so, I havent heard any complaints from my classmates about her being unclothed, so I think she'll probably stay that way for a while. And I see what you mean about the bicep, it's strangely flat, but I havent had time to fix it yet, I'm hoping it'll be fairly unnoticeable when the texture's on, I'm planning to go back and fix her after this presentation, there's a few things nagging me.
Here's a wire for you webhead, I'm not sure how to do the nice looking wires people put up here so this is just the default "wire" texture in the mapping editor. And an environment would be really great, but I have to have her posed, textured and rendered by this friday so I might be cutting it a bit fine.
http://home.iprimus.com.au/grahamcrosby/3D/w-wires.jpg
And another pose I'm trying out, I wanted something a little more dynamic, I may include several still images of her in different poses.
http://home.iprimus.com.au/grahamcrosby/3D/defensive.jpg
Whoah!!! !
may I  ?
Anyway, you've inspired me,maybe I'll give a shot at some FF meself (maybe)
I saw your website - impressive stuff!

Modeling looks ok. She needs Frazetta-style textures to go with the modeling.
MrGrinch
12-08-2004, 06:50 AM
Thanks mora, yes you may  ....:) And do, there should be more volumptuous models out there.
Thanks marc001...Hope this texturing attempt lives up to the master's style.
I'm going to go to work on the hair texturing right after posting this. It has to be done tonight.

Wha wha what !?!
Midget ? Are you out of your mind ? She's perfect !!! :scream:
(in a Frazetta kind of way, but perfect anyhow)
I like the hair and the overall posture of your first pose, but I particularly like the second one, very dynamic indeed.

Could be the perspective doing that Unkind, but she also isnt supermodel proportions :)
Thanks Waugh, I was trying to capture the feeling of movement in Frazetta's paintings.
Glad you think so visionmaster2, could just be her lack of hair making her look a little odd. Here's a shot with hair. Not terribly happy witht the result, this was my first attempt at opacity-mapped hair and I had to do a quick job of it. Appart from posing, she's pretty much finished, ready to be shown off tomorrow.

The hair needs a specular map as well, especially black hair which tends to look shiny.
Her left breast is stretch verticaly and larger than the right one, but it could be vertex weighting issue.
The skin looks right for a Frazetta style painting.
MrGrinch
12-10-2004, 01:10 PM
Thanks for the tips marc001. I put some basic specularity on the hair, but I forgot about giving it a proper spec map, it'd probably make a lot of difference in defining the hair. The rigging was a quick job, there's still a few glitches. I'm planning to go back and skin her again to a custom rig sometime soon.
I just presented this at a uni exhibition to a number of people working in the industry and they seemed fairly impressed. So thanks everyone for your help and encouragement.

I wish I will be able to see your illust-like rendered image in near future.
That's interesting.
Good Job.:)
Awesome work! Can't wait to see her animated.

I know your way past this but it seems like you need more of a curve in the spine her butt sticks out then its straight up. But still i really like it.
MrGrinch
12-16-2004, 09:03 PM
Thanks guys for your great comments, they're really encouraging :)
I see what you mean Sictar, I noticed that Frazetta really exaggerates the curve so I pushed the lower back in fairly far, I may need to blend it in with the upper back more. Besides, I think I will go back and fix up areas of her, she's still a work in progress. I just had to rush to get her completed for my presentation.
enthombed, glad you think so :). I'm hoping to create a whole Frazetta scene to put her in, perhaps some ruins in a forest. I cant post any pictures at the moment, my internet connection's on one computer and my work's on another. If you go back a few posts though, I posted a front and back wire of the body, it hasnt changed much since then. I'm awful at doing wires though, I have to find a better way.

Very beautiful character Mr Grinch !
Some minor problems to fix (I guess the weight skin) the hair are a little too dark , maybe with a spec map and a B&W color one but overall , that's very cool...
Can wait to see the background , ruins would a very great idea...
No crits , I just give you some support , more updates plz :bounce:

Hi there
very nice work indeed'. I'm my self a big fan of Frazetta, and his work.
The only thing I'm focusing on is her toes.
- Try to point them slightly inwards, not the big toe, and maby not the second, but the others, specially the small toe and the toe next to it.
- Try also bring them more tightly togeather. If you take a look on your or somebody elses feet, you'll notice the toes actually are very tight togeather.
Otherwise I really like your model. You have curves and, not the stereotype long body type of woman model.
Keep it up man !

quality work! and from brisbane as well! im in my 3rd year at the college of art on SouthBank (Griffith Uni), and THQ is a serious job prospect for me. congrats!
Frazetta's work is amazing - nice interpretation!
(p.s, i dont want to hijack your thread, but im interested to know if QANTM is worth the money. maybe i should just PM you or something..)
im keeping my eye on this one.

Wow, every time I think this thread has been buried on page 20 of the forum it gets unearthed. I'll really have to keep my word and keep working on her now :) Thanks everyone!
mikkot: Thanks for taking the time to give me some tips. I knew something was off with her feet, but I just couldn't pick it, now I'll know how to fix them :)
There's a few areas I want to fix up, her ribs, under her arms...a lot of that stretching is caused by badly weighted verts during a way-too-rushed skinning process.
Peddy: *Grins* Well maybe I'll see you there sometime in the future Peddy, I start at THQ in about a month. And I second that, Frazetta rocks :) His artistic style is very hard to translate to 3D, I was mostly using his colour palette and proportions to get a similar feel.
Ah qantm...(dont worry, I'll hijack my own thread :)) I'd say it's worth the money, but then the only money they got out of me was the enrollment fee (scholarship student). I personally loved it though, great teachers, very flexible assignments, nice fun atmosphere. It may be changing quite a bit soon, (for the best I hope) as they've just been bought up by SAE, a bit world-wide multimedia college. Lots of upgrades to computers and staff which unfortunately I never got to see untill my leaving night. Speaking of which, they really tell you what it's going to be like working, and how to get a job (all the teachers are or were working in the field they lecture in) the end of year industry night where you show off your final works is a great idea, they actually bring the employers to you. That's how I got the interview with THQ and a couple of other companies, they contacted me after seeing my stuff there that night.
Before I sound like I'm getting paid to advertise qantm I should probably mention that some people doing different courses in the college had problems with uneducated teachers, among other things (much like any other college I assume) and the casualness to handing in assignments meant that some people never got stuff done or pushed themselves.
I wont tell you either way if you should go, it depends if that kind of environment is for you, I think it'll only be getting better because of the upgrades. I just hope they keep on my old lecturers, they were what really made my time there enjoyable and productive. Really great guys.

heh. sounds a lot like the Animation course at QCA (the negative aspect, anyway), but with industry exposure. the only exposure ill get is public exhibition of my graduating film, but i dont know what kind of potential employers go to them.
and dont worry about 'advertising' for QANTM - unless i get a scholarship (i had no idea QANTM did them to start with!) i cant afford to go anyway. private university afterall.
that sucks about the upgrade to QANTM. same thing happened to me - they completely restructured the animation course, but it doesnt go into effect until the year after i graduate. grr. oh well
so, i looked at your website, and youve got some really nice stuff on there. do you have a demo reel? id love to have a gander at it
MrGrinch
01-20-2005, 06:28 AM
Heh, same thing happened at my old highschool, new upgrades that us seniors had to pay for only got put in after we'd graduated....*sigh* but enough whinging...
I think they only do scholarships for school-leavers at the moment, but they're looking to extend that to anyone soon...so check if you're eligable, not a lot of people seem to know about them, so you dont get a lot of competition.
And thanks :) I do have a demo reel, but I also have limited web space so it's not online...I should look into making a small, low-res version for my website. Most of the work from it is somewhere in the cgtalk forums anyway.
