Latest Update: Concept Sketch: Overlook City

Man, I haven't been able to work to much on this in the last few days. I am now widening the view and adding quite a few more buildings. Excuse the rough lines though. I am going to hopefully get it cleaned up tonight. I want to get the city a little more defined and set so I can do a lighting study. I really want to do a sunset in the background so I can get really dramatic highlights on the edges of the buildings. Thanks again everyone for the advice. It is much appreciated.

Here is a bit more final version of the sketch. I cleaned up some lines and changed a few things. I want to add ships docked and some floating around the city and to create a suitable background. I like where it's going right now. If anybody has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

I like where you're going with these drawings. A few suggestions I have are that there doesn't seem to be much space for ships to fly around and dock. I think the composition might benefit from zooming out a little. The rocky background you have has potential, and I keep wanting to see more of it :D Maybe you could have docking stations carved out of the rocks (complete with guiding lights to add some interest)?
Cool stuff :)

Thanks for the input. I see what you mean about the amt of space for the ships. I was thinking earlier and I want to try to put more docking bays in the rock and even some more structures. I thnk zooming out a bit will help the composition as well because I want to make this a part of a larger city.

This is a great angle to show the city from. Your designs look really great, and I can't wait to see more from you. Keep it up!!

I probably wouldn't cut off the tips of the antennas and towers in your final piece. Maybe just a hair more space up toward the top of the document. I love the layout of your city.
Nice to see your wonderful talent
Good Luck!

You're right about not cutting off the tops of the buildings. I am going to expand the view so more is able to be seen. I kind of wanted to do that earlier but just haven't had the time. hopefully I'll be able to post something new today or tomorrow.

I would suggest to draw up more buildings and make them smaller. By altering the scale with the environment (as suggested zooming out may do the trick) I sense there is something grand about it. Have at lease one of the ships fly to or from the platform to show greater depth and movement. Keep up with the good work!

Itd look great if you compacted some more buildings into the actual mountain, a la Rivendale from LOTR...thatd really make it stand out =)

yeah you definatley need to pull the perspective out farther so you aren't so close to the edge.

thanks a ton for the input. I'm working on it right now and should have something up by tomorrow. I really like the idea of putting more buildings into the rock. I'm thinking about putting a network of braces holding the whole thing together and including a platform or two. I originally wanted to make the city much more crowded out on the edge as well. I'm going to work with that idea as well as a few others and we'll see what I can come up with. I'm really looking at how to make this image "grand". I'll post up what I've got tomorrow and I'll go from there. Thanks again!

Looks promising... I was just wondering should there be something in the foreground as well? To give the composition more depth. Just an idea=)

^I agree. and object in the foreground would help.

I'm thinking about putting a ship or two in the foreground to add some depth. I also thought about having someone looking out of a window (maybe a passenger ship just arriving from off world) looking at the city below.

Great concept there. i do have one suggestion, and that would be to 'force' the perspective. You have this city out on a precarious outcrop - emphasise the the precariuousness and scale though a more dramatic and possibly exaggerated perspective.
nice work all in all. keep it up

nice work, looks like in your sketch you're combining the geography and built enviornmnet niceley. Might want to consider some foreground focus. But look forward to more :)

The zoomed out version is working better. I still sense this concept can be made more grand if the tip part of the platform did not get anchored to a ground. You should have that tip going down all the way like what you originally. This would draw the eye to a big environment. Unless you plain to have something at the base. Keep up the good progress.

your sketches are very strong and unified. i think you can improve them by working more on teh distant background. this looks like it will be great in color!
