Hi all!

When I worked on devlopping some ideas for my Grand Space Opera challenge I found an interessting one which I want to devlopp too. Beacause there is not allowed multiple entries and my time is limited I decided to put this idea for later and work on it slowely. So for those which have patience I`m inviting you to follow my thread :)

The idea is inspired by this image (I will post a larger scan soon) made by Giovanni Battista Piranesi representing an ancient temple. http://www.allposters.com/IMAGES/HAD/4611.jpg (http://www.allposters.com/IMAGES/HAD/4611.jpg)

I want to devlopp this idea by making the temple like it was made by an alien civilisation.
The building will have a glass dome so we will see the space, few spaceships, a star, etc. I will also create few characters beacause I want to learn some new modeling techniques.

Feel free to post any comments and critiques even at this early stage.

Thank you.

Interesting image!
I wish you luck in (especially) texturing this. Hope to see some modeling soon.

Cavalera thanks a lot, I will start modeling a first 3d sketch soon... I want to place some trees in my image (in pots) and few strange elements & statues.

Nice idea, your model is going to look very impressive if you do it to the same scale, that place is huge. I immediately thought of the roman senate when I saw this picture. You could have the statues as various different alien races, a kind of global meeting place for the different species. More modelling, but it depends how much time you want to spend on this.
I wish you luck.

MrGrinch thank you for your comment, yes the scale will be huge, in fact I`m thinking about a bigger place :D but I have to keep in mind that I have to place humanoid creatures on the forground so they don`t had to be too small. The final image will be in the A4 format.
I will post today later the stairs.

Just a render of the stairs with small trees. I`m not an architect so I`m not feeling the size of these seps, I made them 60cm long and 30cm high. I still thinking about the balustrade elements... maybe I`ll make them verry stylised with some alien shapes...

Nice stairs. Don't really look like the ones in the picture, but good non the less.

Thanks .:Tr@ceR:. , yes they look too small... but I don`t want to copy exactly the image... just seeking to have the same scale effect now...

shoud be better now.... I made the trees a little bigger...

Very beautiful so far... How did you do the trees? I'd love to learn to make one and put one or two in my concert hall scene to beef it up some... I can't wait to see more...

Thank you kmblackbear06, the trees are made with a plugin wrote by Pawel Olas called TreesDesigner, you`ll find a complete info about it here: www.polas.net (http://www.polas.net) - feel free to ask me anything about it I`m a beta-tester of it :)

I`m thinking to add more trees on the image, the vegetation adds a nice touch to architecture, it makes it alive and will give a good sense of scale here.

With what app are you making this?

BEAUTIFULL start, I'm definately staying for the ride. I really like the way the ramp is so large. Keep it up!!!

@ .:Tr@ceR:. I`m working on Lightwave but I`m thinking to move to Cinema4D, LW is getting verry old  and C4D is cheap and full of fantastic improvments

@ Ze Aratloss thank you for the kind words, I hope to get a nice pic at the end and learn many new techniques :)

stay tuned :bounce:

Another update, it shows the scale a little better. The columns will not be so high...
My ref alien characters have about 2.3m high.... maybe I will reduce them a little bit...

Any comments are welcome.

Nice. This will look awesome! I don't think the pillars look good being completly round though. Have you ever seen the pillars that have the round half circle sides? I can't really explain how looks. Found a pic on google. I think they would look better like this:

Thanks .:Tr@ceR:. , yes of course I will make the pillars more detailed like on your google link. I have to find a good balance between a Roman style and an alien style which I have to create...

Thanks for the support

That is true. Forgot about that. This is supposed to look different because it is alien enhabatid. So I guess you could make the pillars however you like. Maybe have them spiral or something.

Yes that will be weird and odd architecture :buttrock: I have a lot of interesting ideas with many cool shapes. Stay tuned :)

Hi all!

Just a small update with a "tree in a barrel" :D I`m thinking about the design of all the scene, it will be probably verry organic....
This barrel will replace the cubes (on which are actually standing my trees in the scene) so it will be huge and the tree too. It shows a biggining of how will look the pillars.
I think that will be cool to make all this scene like an interior of a gigantic spaceship... we can find everywhere some elements like control pannels, odd devices and more...

Any c&c welcome.

I really like this barrel. But it looks more like relict from the past than from a spaceship :)

Nomad

Good point real distortion but I`m thinking about a design from Stargate or Dune where technology is hidden behind "old looking" designs.

Hey, if you`ll menage to do it good this way - thats even better. Those bumpines/curves on the barrel could be hidden buttons... ;)

Nomad
12-09-2004, 02:28 PM
Yes that can be some pannels... the barrels have also some glowing areas which will add some cool light effects... I will maybe make the scene darker... :curious:

Here you have a closer view of the barrel.

A small update with the "barrel" and a version of it as a pillar... sorry for the terrible lighting... I will work on that later. The orange "thing" is a planet which we`ll see behind huge windows...

Wow, great job on the update. This scene has a lot of pontential!! Can't wait to see it done. Great idea with having the huge planet in the background. :bounce:

Maybe the ring on the pillars should be made out of glass to give the temple a more futuristic feel mixed with that relic like style you did for the trees pots. Great work up to now, keep it up!!!

@ .:Tr@ceR:. thanks a lot for your support, sorry for the delay of my answer, was busy on commercial work :banghead:

@ Ze Aratloss thank you for your comment.... glass? :curious: that shoud look great, with an indice of refraction which will deform the images behind... yummy... but the rings shoud be bigger... maybe with some things inside... I`ll make some tests when I`ll finish the main shape of all the interior and paint the planet.

Hi nomad.
i think your idea ( putting spheres behind the scene ) is interesting
and it gives the atmosphere some fantastic feelings .
try putting some huge statues between the columns .
organic elements is a nice idea too .
