Just thought I'd keep ypu posted on the hairstyles I'm trying to come up with, even though I shoudln't be focusing on those kind of details this early on =p

A small, quick thumbnail idea. I am thinking of trying to imitate japaneese theater/costumes and try to related them to this \"grand space\" idea..

Planning on putting these fellows at the bottom of my peice...I want them to have a more \\\"tree root\\\" look to them..

I like very much japanese art. If you can keep the style your work will be great piece of art.
Thinkers are good invention, but yes I think they look little bit too smooth and organic right now which is not bad, but effect is different. I think this detail adds very much deepness, life and feel of a fairytale to your work.

I think presenting this subject matter as a Japanese woodblock print would be an interesting style. Just a thought.
But besides that, I think the Japanese theater is a great idea, and I can't wait to see how you pull it off. Good stuff!

I was also thinking of japaneese woodcuts too, as you can see I tried doing some of my own variations on it with coloured pencil:

Some rough chracter/idea sketches for the main figure. Want to give her a neo-japaneese woodprint look. (I did these on the bus on the way to school if you must know)

hey dude, you're latest submission drew me to your thread. You've got a nice style
However, I would reconsider your approach. Maybe keep in mind the japanese theatre idea, but think about it differently. You need the passion of a story for a good picture. Think about why you chose to portray japanese theatre. If there is a passion on that aspect, there's got to be a story behind it, and there's got to be a story you can develop into an image. You go about it this way and you are likely to create a piece wtih random figures that have no visual purpose. You may already have a story brewing that you just need to get down on paper, but either way, I believe you need to come to grips with a story and also inform us of the story so we can do what we're able to with our crits to help you portray this story. A Grand Space Opera can not exist without a grand story.
just my humble opinions
look forward to the development of your piece, take care

I'm really enjoying your concept sketches for your characters. They are beautiful in their poses and indirection. Looking forward to more!

I have always been one to trust my convictions, and my beliefs, when it comes to finalizing a direction to move in. As a traditional artist, I also understand the many roads ahead of you...calling to you, but I believe that your figure (geisha) has incredible potential for a new take on traditionalist sci fi thinking. Many of the older books written by Issac Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, and the other greats, utilized cover illustrations which many times juxtaposed a bipedal/humanlike figure with a space-like/multi-dimensional background, to show man's relationship to the unknown. Please go with what your artistic style and convictions tell you to do. These drawings are excellent. Be encouraged...Keep going.
