i'm having a tough time getting nice HDR renders in LW when compared to C4D so I was wondering if there are any free hdr scenes I can download to study ?

HDR scenes? As in LightWave scenes? Or do you mean HDR images?

actual lw scenes that i can look at to see how they are done, hopefully ones that have really good lighting/hdr use if that's possible..
